I've been meaning to see this movie for years--now you have finally convinced me to just go rent it! Lately I've been reading a lot about African Americans in the movies. It's a depressing story, and I've been looking for bright spots (ie:stand-out performances by African Americans). I appreciate you mentioning that I can find such a performance in this movie.

According to imdb.com Leigh Whipper was the first black member of the Actor's Equity Association, and also founded the Negro Actor's Guild. Somewhat of a forgotten soldier in the civil rights movement.
