Sarah, is this the origin of the nickname "Taffy" that Welshmen have long worn among the English? I always wondered how they got that name!It would be wonderful to hear a Welsh men's choir someday here in upstate New York. My great-grandfather was a choir director who worked by contract for many churches both in Wales and in the United States in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Funny, when I was little (long before I started studying Welsh!) I had no idea what the nursery rhyme was about ("Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief..."). But I learned at one of the Cymdeithas Madog Welsh courses that in some circles the Welsh are known as tricksters and pranksters, hence Taffy of the rhyme coming into the house to steal a piece of beef. There are some wonderful stories about pranks in the Iowa Welsh community in a booklet called The Welsh Way, from the Long Creek Oral History Project. I'm not sure if this is generally available but it's an interesting read.
Keep an eye out for traveling Welsh choirs - some of the choir websites are good places to check. And if I hear anything, I'll try to post a bulletin on my site. It was well worth going.

How much exposure did the media give the choir? Were people able to hear parts of the performance on the radio or TV?-- posted by biogardener

I didn't see any, but I don't always keep up with local news and rarely listen to the radio except for NPR. I actually found out about the choir's visit from my parents-in-law, who live in Stockton. I did read a long article in the Stockton Record newspaper about the choir. It was fairly in-depth, though they did misspell the song title "Ar Hyd y Nos" (All Through the Night)-- they spelled it "Ar Hyd a Nose" ! :P
At least there was some media coverage, anyway. They also did a performance in Lodi, and I assume that was in the local papers there as well. What a good question, though. I should probably do a better job of keeping my eyes and ears peeled in case of similar events in the future!

It is up to the people of the community to get in touch with the media ahead of time to make sure that the media will give all the free advertising and coverage possible. Most people are not persistently aggressive enough to get that. I have been involved in promotions and know what it takes to get good media coverage, many hours of volunteer effort behind the scenes.After a while, you get to know which people in the media to contact to get the results you want, and you can accomplish the work in a lot less time.
