A blue moon?? As in "once in a blue moon"?? The very phrase makes it seem like something that happensonly rarely. I hope we get to see it!

Sigh - like so many intriguing-sounding phenomena, the blue moon turns out to be less than it seems. I got so intrigued by Virginia's post that I hunted around to learn more.

Yeah, kinda disappointing, isn't it - just a twofullmoon month. But rather amazing that we haven't had one since, what.....1996? And we get two twofullmoon months in '99 with only the month of Feb in between.

Now let's see what we can do with that February.....probably during that whole month you can stand your CAT on its tail and it will stay. How's THAT.

But surely with TWO blue moons something exciting can happen!

Or maybe, along with its pull at the tides, the extra moons will pull the fleas away from my cat and save me a whole lot of trouble!

I can't resist.....you set it up.......

"And they looked up into the sky and saw the moon made out of .....green fleas!"

It's all beginning to make sense.(We're in BIG trouble)

Ok, forget the green fleas. Here comes our official HARVEST MOON, people! According to our almanac editor , the official full moon is at 4:12 this afternoon. (That's EDT, I don't know WHAT'S going on in Australia!)

We're a little overcast here in Cold Spring, so it may not be Moon Garden Delight like I'd hoped, but I may take a wander up there after dark anyway......Happy Harvest Moon, folks!

Green fleas. I like it! Sort of like that game of "Operator" where you start by saying one thing and by the end the person repeating ithas it garbled - the original statement was "green fleas" and over time we misunderstood them to mean cheese!

It was totally overcast here, too. If there was a full moon we couldn't see it. But the usual phenomenon of people deciding that 5 m.p.h. was a good speed at which to drive was operating.

Well, friends, since my brain was infested with green fleas.....I posted the full moon as 4:12pm Sunday when, in fact it was TODAY. And the sky is crystal clear, so Sir Charles and I took a stroll to the moon garden. The moonlight was SOOOOOOO bright. All the Moon Garden flowers seemed to float in the air, stemless. He remarked that the Sweet Alyssum looked like piles of popcorn. The scent of the Nicotiana greeted us long before we got to the beginning of the garden.

It really WAS quite enchanting and I'm very glad we went as we are due to hit 35 tonite and 32 tomorrow. I think that's going to be about it for the gardens. I trailed my fingers through the Nasturtium leaves on the cutting garden wall as we walked past - they were really cold and damp. The Quince trees gave off their fragrance and we heard a flock of migrating geese SO far above us, that all we could see was the movement, we couldn't pick out the flock at all. We stopped in the sheep barn and just stood and watched the utterly surreal vision of the moonlight-dipped sheep standing so very still outside the barn door.

Yes indeed, it was the Harvest Moon all the way. We ate the last of the brocolli from the vegetable garden tonite and brought in probably the last bouquet of Nasturtiums. It's OK. If Jack Frost wants to do his stomping about by the light of the Harvest Moon, so be it. It's been one hell of a growing season and we're all tired.
