A NonAlcoholic Wedding - Can it Be Done?Read the article this discussion is about

» Dan_Ellsworth - An Evening "Without" In the late afternoon and evening of Saturday, May 5, 2001, Amy and John Mark Ellsworth had a reception they planned, with non-alcoholic drinks furnished. I (John Mark's father) didn't even realize this at first, and went to the "bar" corner of the reception hall and asked for a Coke with lime juice. Neither lemons nor limes were available, as juice or slices. Well, OK, they weren't essential, but I don't think it had sunk in until that moment that they were really doing it. There was a champagne bottle on each table for the toast, though some of us hard-liners stuck to water even for that, but that was it. The couple wondered about the reaction of one likely hard-drinking guest, whether he would make trouble at being denied alcohol. I heard later he slipped out to the clubhouse's regular bar. There were no "scenes" that I know of. The wedding party seemed perfectly capable of having fun in conversation and on the dance floor without chemical alteration. The guests generally had a good time, and some of the champagne bottles might have been emptied, but the church friends at the wedding appreciated the atmosphere. Admittedly, the conversation could be difficult during the loudest music, but it was possible. There is much more to tell about the wedding, of course, but I'll have to let it out in small pieces over the next few months. (I *do* have a life outside the Internet. I *think* I do.) Be sure I tell about "memorial candles" before summer's over. -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth
