» tigerburning - Religious Prejudice I read your story "Cursive and Hell". I'm glad you had enough self assuredness to stand tall and speak your mind to a whole class.I was raised in a Baptist church, so my mother could teach school. In my home state, all teachers were "required" to be Baptist. I remember having many discussions in Bible Study about spirituality and Hell. My beliefs were actually Native American. What the Baptist Church taught its little ones seemed similiar, but I knew somehow in practice it was not. Still I often, like you, spoke of the differences. Eventually word got back to my mother who told me I should never speak about my race or spirituality outside the family. How about you. Did your family ever give you similar advice? -- posted by tigerburning » Schmoopy - Re: Religious Prejudice In response to message posted by tigerburning:My family didn't discourage me from being open about my religion. However you should know that, although I am Jewish, I am a non-practicing Jew, so my faith and spirituality don't come up very often. I was in third grade when that teacher publicly humiliated me, but thankfully I was too young to know the severity of what was happening. When I made that reply, I wasn't really standing up to anybody, I was simply stating a fact. It's funny ... that is one of the few times in my life I had exactly the perfect answer to a situation that normally stuns me into silence! -- posted by Schmoopy
