I read your story "Cursive and Hell". I'm glad you had enough self assuredness to stand tall and speak your mind to a whole class.

I was raised in a Baptist church, so my mother could teach school. In my home state, all teachers were "required" to be Baptist.

I remember having many discussions in Bible Study about spirituality and Hell. My beliefs were actually Native American. What the Baptist Church taught its little ones seemed similiar, but I knew somehow in practice it was not. Still I often, like you, spoke of the differences. Eventually word got back to my mother who told me I should never speak about my race or spirituality outside the family.

How about you. Did your family ever give you similar advice?

My family didn't discourage me from being open about my religion. However you should know that, although I am Jewish, I am a non-practicing Jew, so my faith and spirituality don't come up very often.

I was in third grade when that teacher publicly humiliated me, but thankfully I was too young to know the severity of what was happening. When I made that reply, I wasn't really standing up to anybody, I was simply stating a fact. It's funny ... that is one of the few times in my life I had exactly the perfect answer to a situation that normally stuns me into silence!
