Me too, Jerri! But I am glad to know all of the truth in this article. I have already had two computers struck by lightning - so I knew it could strike twice. But I had no idea it could strike from 10 miles away - or that I should worry about heat lightning.

I've lost a modem to an electrical surge caused by lightning. It was a couple of hundred dollars to replace!

Most people alread know about the kind of surge protector used with the plug that powers your computer. But did you know there are special surge protectors designed to shield your modem? They're usually about $20-$30, but I'd say they're a good investment!

I would say that this is the kind of surge protector to get. When mine was hit I had it plugged into not only a surge protector on my desk but also one at the outlet box - and it didnt help. Of course my husband ran a phone line up the side of the house instead of fishing wire - and so the phone cord is outside and unprotected. I have learned now to immediately unplug the modem if we see lightning.(Of course then I can't get any work done - but I wouldn't be any better off with a dead computer. . . ;-)

You shouldn't be working during a thunderstorm anyway. It's against the rules - you should be watching the spectacular show!
