2001 Hurricane PredictionsRead the article this discussion is about

Hurricane prediction is extremely difficult! The science is too imperfect at this point for forecasters to narrow it down to a very specific area. That means the forecast can change quickly, so meteorologists have to report frequently - especially when a tropical cyclone is about to make landfall. After all, not everyone is watching constantly, so all that repetition serves to warn those just tuning in. -- posted by Schmoopy » DocDonald - Re: Re: Media induced hurricane panic! In response to message posted by amy_marquis:I agree that they have a responsibility but they do not report in a responsible manner. They foment & drive messages of panic & fear to the public instead of simply reporting the facts. As a Florida native who has lived through a number of hurricanes in my life time I know what needs to be told, what needs to be re-told, & what needs to be left out of their reporting. Responsibility is a 2-edged sword and they are only riding on one edge! -- posted by DocDonald » Schmoopy - Re: Re: Re: Media induced hurricane panic! In response to message posted by DocDonald:I too am a native of hurricane country (New Orleans), so I can identify with your exasperation. It might interest you to know that studies have been done on people's response times to the warnings. They have found it takes many repetitions to get a person to realize evacuation is necessary and even more for that same person to actually take action. By the way, this debate is kinda fun -- posted by Schmoopy » DocDonald - Re: Re: Re: Re: Media induced hurricane panic! In response to message posted by amy_marquis:I used to work in emergency rooms and now work in public health! I know all too well what happens & why! My take on this is if the "public safety" officials/officers cannot get the dumb folk to evac then let them suffer the consequences...! John D. MacDonald said it best with his book, Condominium,, when he described the events before, during & after a hurricane on the mid-Florida Gulfcoast. It should be required reading for ALL immigrants to the state of Florida as well as all high school students in the state! -- posted by DocDonald » Mountain_lady - Weather Hi Amy, I'm sure glad I don't live in the hurricane areas but I do in tornado alley. I don't know which would be the worse.-- posted by Mountain_lady » Schmoopy - Re: Weather In response to message posted by Mountain_lady:Both tornadoes and hurricanes can be deadly - it just depends on their intensity. Staying safe in these situations is easier if you know what to do. Check out The Truth About Tornadoes. It's always interesting to read personal accounts of weather-related events - take a look at Carol Wallace's Garden Variety Tornado! -- posted by Schmoopy » QuarterRat - 2001 Forecast Update Hi Amy,Did you notice right after Allison formed that Dr Gray has again upgraded his forecast... I think it is going to be an above normal season... Nice Job... -- posted by QuarterRat « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
