» txjacque - Is wanting to start digging my first pond .... now!

I got a wild hair this weekend and have spent the last 2 days on the Internet researching 'mini ponds' and 'water gardens'... my next project! I woke up Saturday morning and knew absolutely NOTHING about water gardens, and now, well, I have a lot of information that I'm trying to absorb.

Everything I've read says to build your pond in the spring. The problem is... it's September and I want my pond NOW! Patience never was one of my strong points.

I would love to hear any and all advice, opinions and comments on what I should do, but... if I wait until Spring, it will never get done.

I live in Fort Worth, Texas (USA), so our winters are usually pretty mild, only 1 or 2 hard freezes and I'm not thrilled with the idea of moving my plants and critters into the house for those months, so I guess I'll be digging a deeper hole.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi and welcome to the Water Gardening topic... if you go to the links area there are many links including ones to other online groups and forums with tons of information. For many in the North, it is time to start getting ready for winter but in TX you may have an extended time period to start a water garden. Personally I have started water gardens in Spring because it allows months of plant grwoth and a period for the pond to become balanced which is helpful in keeping wildlife healthy and algae in check. Many tropical plants need 60F or over to grow properly, many people use them for quick growth in a pond. If not enough plant cover is provided to shield the sun and take up nutrients, you may have a pond but it would be very green with algae.
