» dab7457 - fish dying in ponds

I lost all my fish this winter and I don't know why? My heater was always running. My husband was out by the pond on Thursday and seen the fish swimming and then on Sunday they were all floating. Seems to short of a period for all the fish to die at one time. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I wanted to get an autopsy on one but my husband said we could use that money to buy more fish. I really don't know if I want more fish, this really broke my heart, because most of these fish I was training to come up and eat out of my hand. I raised them from babies. They were the babies of my bigger fish.

Hello,

This reply is a bit late because I am the new CE of the topic. There could have been many reasons for the fish to have died... you didn't say the type of fish you had or how big your pond is but things can include shock from the heater, the pond not being deep enough or noxious gases building up in the water from the pond fully freezing over. Too many fish can also be a problem and some fish are just not as hardy as others. It can be a good idea to find other ponders locally or visit GardenWebs pond area (found in our links area) to better pin point the problem.
