» RDLarson - as a kid

and even as an adult I've loved all the books and especially "The Egg and I" by Betty MacDonald. The first time I read I was the crew chief and everything else for our chickens. I laughed and laughed -- Mama said when I was reading that book I'd start cackling like one of the hens. I once had big Rhode Island Red Rooster. He was the honey of the hens. I named him Big Red. He could almost always catch blackberries when I tossed them to him. When he died of old age, we had a marvelous funeral with all my dogs, cats, duck, and the Rooster's wives. We had a long parade through the pasture and a casket covered with trilliums and daffodils.

This is the makings for a book, RD. When are we gonna have RD Stories? I love your writing! And I can just see the funeral procession.

We used to have burials for birds that hit our large living room window and died, but not as elaborate as what you describe. Did you build the casket? Ours was usually a shoe box and the dear departed usually got wild daisies.

Thanks for the reading tips, Jerri! I might read the Egg and I (the passage you quoted is quite heady), but I will look for The Plague and I first. I have always had an abiding interest in pathology for some reason.

Arizona was also founded, in part, by people with TB from the East Coast who were trying to breathe clean, high-desert air. Prescott, for example, is full of "TB cabins", bungalow-type homes with huge windows and porches, so people could take the 'fresh air cure'.

So i'll be looking with interest at this author. Thanks for the excellent article!

Thanks for introducing us to Betty MacDonald. I will have to look up some of her writings. I remember enjoying the old Ma and Pa Kettle movies.

I didn't realize that about Arizona, Jill. Prescott is one of my favorite little towns, but it didn't occur to me to look at the houses. I will have to do that next time I'm there. Curious!

I hope you do read all of her books. I am getting quite hooked, so I suspect I will have them all in my library soon. Glad you enjoyed reading about this amazing woman.

You're welcome, Joy. Hope you get ahold of her writing. Her descriptions are a joy for any writer, or reader, to read. I especially can feel it in my bones, as it's my meighborhood (all of WA is my neighborhood!). You won't be disappointed if you read these.

Thanks, Stephen. It's back in print after all these years (written in 1945). I think you'll enjoy the view of what the northwest was like then - and still is in parts. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did and will forever. Appreciate your visit!

Jerri,

I will continue requesting these books. Yes, if that book is lost within the library, it would be quite a challenge to find it. There must be a couple million books in there. LOL

We do have inter library loans. Why didn't I think of that. I wil lgive that a try. I really do want to read the books. They sound very interesting.
