We purchased our country property at the end of Winter. There was a small and neglected garden with a few roses full of blackspot, dead headed hyite hydrangeas. I thought it would all have to go, when we started to create our own garden. One day, before we moved in, we drove down to see what the workmen [inside the house] had done. There, in a corner of the "Home ORchard" were clumps of species daffodils, shining through the long grass. I still remember the glow of happiness those brave bulbs gave to me. Another occasion was in Canada. Kees and I married in February and I can tell you the snow was an enormous shock to me. Kees, easing me into married life, very carefully, had rented a very nice home for 3 months. And for weeks all I saw was snow, when I looked out of the "picture" windows. One day, when I put on my over shoes to go out and collect the mail, I glanced down and saw clumps of crocus pushing their way through the snow. What a delightful scene. So, these always remind me of warmer days to come -- posted by Gay_Klok » jerrib - Gay's Favorite In response to message posted by Gay_Klok:Hi Gay: Glad to have you stop in and share your favorite spring thing: crocus peeking through the snow. It's great when spring arrives in the smallest way, as we appreciate it more. Hope your ensuing fall is as enjoyable. On that side of the world, you will hope that Spring lives up to its name and be the beginnings of a new and different year Here, in the Southern hemisphere, the leaves are turning and there is a coolness at night that always heralds the winter days to follow. But I love the fall of Autumn BTW I love in Spring time, all the birds that come back to the garden to collect their building materials -- posted by Gay_Klok » CulinaryJen - Your article has been linked... Thanks for the link! It's always fun to return to an old article and read it again. -- posted by jerrib » Tina_Coruth - Re: How many of you grow rhubarb? In response to How many of you grow rhubarb? posted by jerrib:Hi Jerri, I just popped over from Jenn's rhubarb article. Rhubarb used to grow wild in the back yard when I was a kid, but we never used it in cooking. I used to love strawberry rhubarb pie. I enjoyed revisiting this article. A nice reminder of how the daffodils will look in a few weeks. They are sprouting now. I like the photo of the cow, too! -- posted by Tina_Coruth » Gay_Klok - Re: How many of you grow rhubarb? In response to How many of you grow rhubarb? posted by jerrib:Rhubarb was growing in the 'vegetable' area when we purchased the country garden. We never feed it but get healthy, rosy sticks to cook every year. I always a bit of gin when cooking it, takes out the bitter taste. -- posted by Gay_Klok « Previous 1 2 3 4 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
