Traveling to Wales
This archived discussion is "read only".
» ellenh - Travel Plans My husband and I will be traveling to Wales in August of this year. It is part of a four-country package. My grandpa was from Wales, having come to America as a young man. I know very little about his beginnings. The family members that might have been able to fill in some blanks for me are gone. But at least I will be in his country and have a chance to experience a part of my roots that I know little about. Has anyone done any traveling in this part of the world?-- posted by ellenh » alywales - Re:Travelling to Wales In regards to your grandfather, if you happen to know when and where he was born in Wales, I can get you pointed in the right direction as to how to trace his roots, Birth, marriage and death records are readily available from the mid 1830s at registry offices, and before that at parish churches. There are a vast amount of historical and genealogical societies here that will do look-ups for you, and myself and husband would be more than happy to help you in any way we can.As for travelling, again we can help. I am pretty familiar with the UK (Wales in particular!) as well as some of Western Europe. My husband of course is far better than I and can give you lots of help...comes from being a native of these parts! If you'd like any help, please email me at alyjones61@bluecarrots.com and I would be happy to assist you. And thanks for reading my article! -- posted by alywales » Marella - Traveling to Wales Bore da,My husband and I will be spending a week in Wales in September of this year. We'll have three days in Betws-y-Coed (which looks like it should be pronounced betoos-ih-coyd; is that close?) and then four in Amlwch on Anglesey. A several times gr-grandfather of mine was born on Anglesey in 1723 and the house still stands there. I'm very excited to be going. While we're there, though, any advice on absolute must-see items? We want to do some walks in Snowdonia and Anglesey, and I'd love to see some Bronze Age sites. The last time I was in Britain, I went to England and Scotland, and spent most of my time rushing from one "big" site to another (Stratford, Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Culloden, Sterling, etc.). This time I want to see more of the out of the way stuff and have time to walk the trails and really see the countryside. -- posted by Marella
