Hi Lisa,

What a timely (in lieu of September 11th) and meaningful topic! I'm glad to find your new column. Just the other night I was saying to my husband how I wanted to get involved in some volunteer activity, so now I'm going to poke around your links for some helpful information.

Welcome!

Wonderful article! Great topic! Many people would like to help but simply don't know how or where. I volunteer one afternoon a week at my local animal shelter and the rewards are tremendous! I am going to enjoy your new topic!

» Jo Murphy - Has To Be Better Than The Dole

Hi Lisa,
I have spent the last two years as a volunteer at a Recovery House.
The Volunteers of Lucinda House are often ex-residents who remain after their time as part of a commitment to give back to the organisation where they received support for their recovery. It is also part of the whole philosophy of Recovery to do service work so as to maintain a healthy and spiritual state of mind. Remaining grateful and focusing on others and not on selfish matters. Other volunteers are often students who are doing volunteer work at Lucinda to gain experience and to benefit from the knowledge of working with residents and the co-ordinators to gain skills, knowledge and experience mentorship.
Although I began volunteer work to occupy myself while on a Work Cover claim the experience and skills learned over that time have opened up a whole new world to me. I stay a volunteer now even though I have returned to the work force as it truly is a worthwhile experience.
Great topic. I've subscribed
Thanks,
Jo Murphy

Goes along with giving being more joyous than receiving, in my book.

» Butterfly_Kisses - Put on this Earth to Volunteer

I think God has put me on this Earth to Volunteer. I have this natural desire to just help people. I am a very giving and caring person. Sometimes I feel I have missed my calling. I loved Lisa's article about Volunteerism. I've been looking for somebody with the same interest and desires. Even though I have never actually participated in any large organized events, I have been looking for them to participate in. My life will not be fulfilled until I do. Lisa you must be a great person to have such a heart to want to help others and so do I. If there is anything I can do volunteer, please email me with the information. I would love to get involved right-away. I will also read all the related links.

Hi Butterfly Kisses,

I read your profile, and you mention doing a lot of volunteer work with kids & computers. As luck would have it, my next article (coming out Oct 1.) is about "Service in Cyberspace" -- how to volunteer using your computer, the internet, etc. Maybe you'll see some ideas there that you can pursue. So many non-profit organizations desperately need help with technology, from data entry to website design. Sounds like there might be a match there for you.
