Well, don't wish too hard or they may pop put prematurely and then freeze to death! A couple of years back I got so excited about seeing buds on the hellebores that I cut back all the old foliage - too soon. We had one of the coldest days of winter almost immediately after and the hellebore display that year was considerable diminished.

But you and I both are anxiously awaiting th buds appearing when we KNOW it is safe and that spring is really on its way! (Think of all the great pictures you'll be able to take and then show us!!)

By the way - what software do you use for your photos?

Great article, Carol! I was so excited last week because my bulb sprouts sprouted, and my lavender has little green leaves on the tips of the plants... and I'm dying to get out there and put my mint at a corner of the house and see if it can really take over a whole yard LOL Y'all have created a monster teaching me to grow things! rofl We're having a couple of cold days and then a couple of warm days and back and forth and back and forth... but I know it's coming... "spring!" That magical gardening word. It's given me a whole new take on seasons, and I'm loving every minute of it.

One day soon, I'm going to have to start an herb gardening thread here before it gets too late to start planting them LOL

Love & Hugs,
Darlene

I could tell you about the method the Indians use for determining the earliest time to plant things each spring. It involves sitting on the ground with a bare bottom - if it's too cold for that it's too cold to plant. ;-)

And unless you have a lot of dry shade at that corner of the house your mint really will take over. I'l plant mine within some confines - coffee cans with top and bottom removed or something similar - or you may not have room to plant anything else.

Isn't it nice the way gardening puts us in tune with the passing of the seaons?

Well, I have lots of room and no budget LOL So if it takes over, that's cool with me, and it's definitely in direct sunlight, and there's a creek wtihin throwing distance of that spot, too. Maybe I could draw a diagram of my yard and see what y'all think about where to plant my herbs and such. I seem to be awake, so I'll go work on it LOL

Love & Hugs,
Darlene

That's a great idea! We'll have to open a thread just for you and your plans - and then as usual we will waltz in and make all kinds of suggestions. It's so much more fun when it's a group project!

I use Adobe Photo Deluxe for my picture downloading. And I can hardly wait to start taking spring and summer pictures soon. Other than the hoarfrost we had it has been a pretty boring winter to take pictures as we didn't get much snow around here. Grey dreary days haven't helped either. But I am waiting patiently....well maybe not that patently. LOL

In response to message posted by Rosee:
I am guessing that somewhere under "Edit" on the toolbar for Photo Deluxe you have some function that will allow you to change the size of your photos. I used Photoshop, which is a lot more complicated but since they are both by Adobe I have to figure they both have resizing functions. You may see something like "Image Size" - and if you don't see that try "Transform" if you have any such command - in Photoshop at least that lets me push the corners of a graphic around until I've made the picture smaller.

Does anyone else use Photo Deluxe that can be more specific about that?

Mint allaegedly likes moist soil - I planmted some orange mint in th4e side year where it gets a lot of competition from huge tree roots - but it is increasing anyway - although not at the alarming rate that it would in favorable conditions. By the way - if you are growing mints for their specific scents and flavors try to keep them separated by as much of a distance as possible - otherwise you'll end up with a hybrid that won't have the character of any of them!

I am hoping, as you, that the plants that I had to bring in will just manage to survive until I can get them back outdoors. I don't know about you, but our house is too dry and doesn't get enough light for many plants to flourish. The best I hope for when I drag things in each autumn is survival.

Great! If you hadn't I was going to try to dig out my copy of PhotoDeluxe or whatever it is you use and install it just so I could give you instructions. It came with my scanner but since I already had Photoshop - which is a HUGE program, I never installed it.

But if you find you have trouble with the uploads you can always call on any of us editors to do it for you! (Although your post just jogged my memory - I have photos that Marian sent me and I have veen uploaded them - I simply forgot to post them! I guess I'd better run to her thread and do that!
