Hi Mary Lou!

You forgot to tell us the name of the "1 that works."

We are having terrible problems with deer this year eating hostas very close to houses. I imagine they taste like salad to the deer smile

» Liatris - Hello again

"Deer Out" works wonders. I have had no damage in a month. I still have lily buds everywhere. Nothing has been eaten here. The other two brands did not work as well. I t says it lasts a few months but I spray once a week or less and it has solved the problems. Neighbors are still complaining of the deer. I'll find the link and post it.

Hi Georgene,

That's the name: "This 1 Works." When I was out yesterday to get another gallon, it wasn't as expensive as I remembered. It was about $40 for a gallon of ready-to-spray liquid. It tasts awful. How do I know, you ask? Because on occasion I've had the wind blow it back in my face! I don't think there's anything terribly toxic in it, just the bad taste seems to keep the deer away. It lasts quite awhile without re-spraying.

Forgot to say that I've used it on hostas, hydrangeas, daylilies--but you have to remember to spray them again when the buds come along. Also on some gloriosa daisies. I have glorious 'Annabelle' hydrangeas at the moment, and the few daylilies that I still grow are blooming. I gave up on lilies because of my clay soil. They don't seem to like it.

Guess I will be on the look out for some of this "Deer Out". The deer have been nipping off the buds of a little tree that I have been babying along. Also has done some damage to some trees that I have bordering one side of the yard. They sure do make a nuisance of themselves don't they, but I just love to see them wandering out in the back field. smile

Here's a website for "This 1 Works". You can't order online, but you can search for dealers near you. Click on "Product Labels", scroll down to the Ts, and you can see what the jug looks like. Then click on "Dealers" and follow directions to find a dealer near you.

And after reading the label more closely, I guess I should be more careful about it blowing back in my face!

All of you forgot one method of keeping the deer out...Stop the encroachment of their habitat, and the destruction of their natural predators, particularly wolves. Since this is not particularly feasible, get a hunting license and put the deer in your freezer, and enjoy a venison roast with your broccoli, beans and beets...all of which seem to be favorite deer food in my own garden.
