» jerrib - My prayers are with you

My mother had cancer, so I can emphathize with the feelings you may be having.

You are well-respected and loved, not only at the Suite, but I am sure by many others. May this love stay with you during this difficult time.

Bless you as you work to get well again. You are strong, Mary Ellen, and your good health will prevail.

» Maryel - Thank you ME

To those of you who have not already heard the news, my sciatica diagnosis has
become more serious. I have been diagnosed with cancer. However, my family and
I are quite positive of mind and spirit. As for me, I am quite surprised by my
reaction. I would have thought I would run to my bed in panic and cover my head.
But no I feel a wonderful, positive calm.

Maybe this little story will tell you a bit about the Bradshaw/Dorman women ( my
maiden name)A week before my diagnosis, my almost 94 year old mother fell and
broke her femur. It was a bad break and the electocardiograph hook up was
beeping loudly as my mother has a very bad heart condition. Emergency staff were
quite excited and wanted to know if my mother had been having heart attacks. i
told them as far as I knew no. I looked closely into my mother's eyes to see if
there was pain. Nothing! She was chatting away , just wondering what the
beeping was. The next day the anaethesist (sp?) took me aside and said my mother
would not live through the operation. He said if it was his mother he would not
put her through the surgery. Later the surgeon came in and said it was doubtful
she would survive the surgery but thought she should have it for better pain and
movement management post op.

For two days relatives arrived and visited thinking this may be the last time
they would see her alive. For my mother , she was enjoying this emensely.

Finally it was time to move her to the operating room) As they wheeled her out
there was silence, then a voice muttering from the stretcher could be heard,
" You're not getting rid of me this easily." She is now fine, waiting to get
mobile so she can take cae of her hospital roommates.

To all of you who have sent heartfelt messages, positive thoughts and wonderful
energy, I thank you.
Mary Ellen

PS In the words of my mother, "You're not getting rid of me this easily."

I'm so pleased to see your calm strength shining through, you're probably the calmest hen in the chicken coop right now smile

Your mother reminds me of my Grandma, she was a London cockney born and bred, quick to laugh, but woe betide if you crossed her smile She had cancer too, in her late 70's. Not only did she beat it, she gained a new lease of life and we called her the Bionic granny. Sadly it would be Alzheimer's next, but she was here for 95 glorious years.

But it's people like my Grandma, who lived through two World Wars and came out smiling, and your own mother and yourself, that while you may not be "famous," you're most definitely ornery. Good for you, you're the salt of the earth smile

what a wonderful story - and what wonderful women you dorman women are!

i wish you the very best, knowing that a positive attitude is the best thing you can take into a battle of this sort. i hope all of your family can find the same strength that you seem to have tapped into. but then - would we expect anything less of you?

your foxgloves put on a lovely show this year. i can never see them without thinking of you.

» biogardener - Update from Barrie.

In answer to my inquiry, Barrie, Mary Ellen's brother-in-law, has given Suite101 editors an update on her treatment. I want to share it with the readers who are unable to access the editors' discussions. Here is what he wrote today:

Hi to all. Mary Ellen is about a third of the way through her chemo treatments and has had radiation on her hip and wrist. She is more comfortable as the pain in wrist and hip has gone down. She is able to swallow food with lumps in it which is a good thing as she was getting darn tired of soup.

Julie (with her boy friend) is home so there is more family in the house that allows Peter and Tim to have a break from time to time.

Mary Ellen’s spirits are still high and she is optimistic she can win the day – she is unsinkable. She also has a high confidence level in her medical team that helps.

Problems in sitting in a regular chair and her sore wrist have kept her from the computer. Hopefully she will be back online in the near future.

Mary Ellen’s brother, Jim is hosting Christmas dinner and Marlene, Bryan and I will be joining the family for a New Years dinner.

Thank you for your concern and good thoughts. It all helps.

For anyone who does not know, Judy is Mary Ellen and Peter's daughter, and Bryan is Marlene and Barrie's son. Peter and Barrie are brothers.
