» benner - Leaves turning yellow

Hi, I just planted a hibiscus plant 2 weeks ago, it is making alot of flowers, but the leaves are turning yellow, then falling off, the new growth is coming out yellow also, what is causing this, and what can I do to stop it? I know it gets enough sun.

Fist of all, what kind of hibiscus - a tropical or a hardy one? Second, is it in sun or shade, what kind of soil is it in and how much water has it been getting? And where are you - at least which climate zone?

Yellowing could mean pests, it could mean too much water, not enough nitrogen - and sometimes it is simply shock as theplant has been moved from its accustomed location to a new one.

The most common cause is overwatering.

I'd also check for pests - examine the leaves carefully to see if you can see any sign of either the pest of pest damage.

With a tropical hibiscus yellowing can be triggered by any sudden change of light or water levels or cold shock.

The best thing you can do is find out the ideal conditions for the type of hibiscus you have and then do your best to give it to your plant.

Hi Carol, thanks for the tips, I am in zone 9, it is in full sun, I have a clay like soil not sandy at all, it is a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis,I checked for pest, I see no sign of pest.It is putting out pretty flowers, but the leaves are turning yellow and falling off, even the new growth, if you know what it is, please let me know, the only thing is starting putting on it, is Schultz,Iron Green,8-0-0,if you know anything else, please let me know,I planted some roses this year,I got them from J&P, one of the rose plants is doing the same thing,it might need Iron.
Thanks

If it's in clay - which I know all too well, then it may actually be getting too much water. Is the soil very compacted?

And have you tried giving it a dose of balanced fertilizer? 8-0-0 means you gave it straight nitrogen while a growing plant also needs potassium and phosphorous for healthy growth.

I found a good web pageon the care and feeding of your hibiscus here

The most common cause of chlorosis (yellowing) in roses is poor drainage - which is why I suspect that both of your problem plants are suffering because of the clay soil - which is not known good for drainage. It could also be that you have too much lime in your soil - do you know if your soil is acid, alkaline or what? At any rate, iron should help to counteract some of the problem but I suspect your best bet is to improve the soil or create raised beds for planting.
