» Tom - A Little Tip

Everyone likes to see flowers growing brilliantly in a garden, but some of us folks like to cut them and bring them inside, to spruce up the kitchen table, or whatever.

I found that by adding a pinch of Miracle Grow to the water in a vase, the flowers will retain their beauty much longer. I usually add just enough to color the water a light blue.

Miracle Gro?? Was this an experiment? I'd never heard of it. I have heard of using a teeny bit of bleach, and many thngs that I've read suggest that a bit of sugar is good; I've heard people recommend a tablespoon of lemon-lime soda (I'm not sure why it must be that flavor!) and even an aspirin tablet. But this is the first I've heard of Miracle-gro - and the pale blue water sounds nice if you have a clear glass vase! We have so many bulbs blooming now that I really ought to cut some and try this.

Hi Carol..... Yes, it was an experiment. I figured that if water would keep flowers alive for a few days, that adding a little plant food should enhance their staying time. I've tried it with roses, and daffodils, and it seems to work great. I thought I'd share it with you and your readers. Have a nice day!

Thanks! Not just for the tip but for the little nudge to go out and pick some flowers.

One more tip, though - don't put daffs and other bulb flowers in the same vase - the daffs exude some kind of liquid that makes the other flowers wilt extra fast.
