Question about banana trees!

A friend of mine has a banana tree and the bottom leaves turn brown and die? she was wondering if banana trees are supposed to do this while they grow?To state the Question:
Are the laves on the bottom of a banana tree supposed to turn brown while the tree keeps growing?
If i could get an answer and explanation to this it would be great
