» cmryor - Composer Poll

Hi Diana, I'm new in the neighborhood here at the Suite. I play the 'cello. Nice site you have here!

I am just dropping by to let you and your readers know that there is a poll going on at the German Interest topic about which composer is the reader's favorite.

Come on by and cast your votes!

Thanks a lot.

» Andorus - General music theory questions

Hi--I'm new to Suite101, so I hope I'm doing this right. :o) I play the violin in my school's orchestra, but couldn't play 1st semester due to a schedule conflict, so I forgot a lot of crucial theory...mainly about sharps and flats. When reading sharps l-r, what order do they go in? All I can remember are F and then C. I have the same question re. flats, too. And how can you tell what key you're in by looking at the sharps/flats? There's some kind of pattern, which I keep forgetting.

I have a lot more questions, but this is plenty for now. :o) Thanks!

» fiddle - Sharps and flats

Andorus, I can't really answer your 1st question but here are some key signatures: no sharps or flats is key of C, one sharp is G, 2 sharps is D, 3 sharps is A, and 4 sharps is E. One flat is F, 2 flats is Bb, 3 is Eb I think. Those are the ones I know.

I actually kind of forgot about Suite101 for a while...thank you so much, everybody! :o) It's been coming back to me the more I've played this semester, too, which has helped immensely.

In response to message posted by Andorus:

Order of Sharps: F, C, G, D, A, E, B Mnemonic"Fat Cats Go Down Alleys Eating Bugs" Naming the Key in Sharps: Go to the last sharp on the right then name the next letter in the alphabet.
Order of Flats: B, E, A, D, G, C, F Mnemonic - Spell BEAD then Greatest Common Factor. Naming the Key in Flats: Go to the penultimate flat and name it. If the key has one flat, it is the key of F major. It the key has no sharps or flats, it is the key of C major.
