» crisbe - Power Mac 6100

Hi,

I am an editor at Suite101 for genealogy. As I was doing a little computer housecleaning today, I thought I would see what was available on Suite101 for Macs. I guess you wouldn't call my Mac vintage, but with the new Imacs it feels that way.

I was thinking of getting a vintage Mac just to put my genealogy records on. You can never have too much backup when it comes to important records- so I am glad to see your site.Looking forward to future articles.

» NHgeneral - PowerMac 6100

Hey!
A powermac 6100 is a great machine, one of the original powerPC macs to be released in march of 1994!
Anyway, a good mac for storing records... hmm. Most old macs would do fairly well at this task, depending on how large the database is going to be. If it is a fairly large database I would recommend a Quadra. These were the last wave of pre-PowerPC macs, and also include ethernet for easy networking with your 6100. These computers are fast, functional, and cheap. Attributes like that combine to make them a good buy.

Hope this helps,

Will Seidel

I don't even want to tell you how much my Quadra cost 7 years ago (it was a five digit figure). They really are great machines and I heartily concur about buying one. There isn't much you can't do with a Quadra; I still use mine as my primary personal machine. If you do get one, don't tell me how much you pay for it unless you want to hear my screams all the way from Boston.
