-- posted by Joy Butler » humorous_sage - Budgets Alas, I'm afraid that I will have to settle for my old Model T Ford. It might not be as fast but it does did cost a bit less the last time I checked (a few decades ago).Hank -- posted by humorous_sage » dancooper - Re: Ferrari In response to Ferrari posted by JButler:Hello Joy, The sound of the name, Ferrari, is almost as intoxicating as the sound of a Ferrari powering away from a stop. The sound of an engine under load can be almost erotic. The re-make of Gone in 60 Seconds, starring Nicholas Cage, comes to mind as I think back on the sound of a Ferrari as opposed to that of an American V8. Back in the earlier days of auto racing, the sound of V12 Ferrari racing engines was compared to the sound of ripping leather. Pretty neat analogy. Thanks for stopping by, and I’m glad you liked the article.. Dan -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Re: Budgets In response to Budgets posted by humorous_sage:Hey, Henry, how ya doin? You’re right about the nature of budgetary considerations, and the limitations those considerations impose. But just because I will never own one of those glorious beasts doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate them for the beauty and elegance, as well as the power and handling finesse they represent. You do have to wonder, though, about a car costing a half million dollars... Dan -- posted by dancooper

Sounds to me like an affair with an unattainable love. lol BTW, how do you like this 103 heat index we're having today? -- posted by Joy Butler » humorous_sage - Re: Re: Budgets In response to Re: Budgets posted by dancooper:Hmmm. I wonder what a working model T Ford would cost today. Hank -- posted by humorous_sage » dancooper - Re: Re: Re: Ferrari In response to Re: Re: Ferrari posted by JButler:Hi Joy, Yes, the heat was oppressive yesterday. Here in the Hill County it was almost to Houston-esque standards. I was glad to be in air conditioning. The bedraggled folks who had to work outside in the heat yesterday looked like whipped puppies. The “unattainable love” comparison is a pretty good one in this case. Yes, I’ll have to admit it. My comment to those who have asked what I would do if I won a lottery, was that you spell it, “F-e-r-r-a-r-i.” Dan -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Re: Re: Re: Budgets In response to Re: Re: Budgets posted by humorous_sage:Hi Henry, Good question. I have often thought about that, too. The auto industry, floundering as it is, might do well to consider cranking out some replicas of models they created in the past. They have played with the nostalgia factor, but not as thoroughly as they might have. The Ford Thunderbird is a good example. I have not driven one, but the idea to bring back the concept of the original was just wide of the mark (I feel). I think they should further extend the concept. I like the new T-bird, but I think they should have made it look even more like the original, rather than like a vague copy of the original. The running gear should be state of the art, but the appearance should be very nearly the same as the original, with only detail differences, or perhaps some obvious change like a very slight difference in wheelbase, or something (to differentiate the new from the old for collector car status, etc.). While the Ford GT more closely approaches my idea (looks almost identical to the original, with a new dohc V-8), it isn’t going to make a lot of waves in the market at $140,000. It is still a great idea, though. And, if you've got the bucks to buy one and sit on it for about a decade, it should be worth over a million by then... I wonder what it would cost to crank out Model-T’s today. Certainly a lot more than it did originally, but it would be interesting, wouldn’t it? There’s probably not much market for the T as it originally looked. And the best effort they came up with to simulate the concept in a modern dress, didn’t do too well. (The Maverick, remember?) Dan -- posted by dancooper » humorous_sage - Model T In response to Re: Re: Re: Budgets posted by dancooper:If they came out with a Model T edition, we would have to learn how to shift the darn thing. They had their own method of changing gears if I remember correctly. Hank -- posted by humorous_sage
