Becoming a vegetarian
This archived discussion is "read only".
» Glenda_Hyatt - New vegetarian? Lately I have had problems eating chicken, particularly if its still on the bone. I nearly feel sick. The more 'processed' it is, the easier it is to swallow. And I find going through the meat department disgusting. Does this mean I'm becoming a vegetarian? Is it a gradual process? Or is it a sudden change? I'm content eating less meat, but I don't want to become one of those 'pain-in-the-butt' dinner guests who are so finicky. And my husband doesn't want to become a 100% vegetarian; and I don't want to need to cook two dinners. Any advice as to what to do now? Where do I go from here?

Exactly what you are experiencing is what happened to me. It was gradual and not necessarily conscious - first I could no longer stomach poultry or fish and then I couldn't eat any meat at all except bacon, sausage or hotdogs (real healthy, I know!). Then I couldn't even tolerate those. I do have many vegetarian friends, am a huge animal lover and strongly object to the inhuman farming/killing practices but more so, my body just decided it didn't want meat anymore. I stopped eating it and one day realized I hadn't had any meat in weeks. Now my reasons are more conscious - I do it for the animals and for my own health. You most certainly do not have to become one of those 'pain-in-the-butt' dinner guests - I haven't ;) - nor do you have to completely stop eating animal products unless you chose do. It's a personal decision and please do not let anyone else dictate how you eat! As for meal prep, my ex-boyfriend ate meat and since I didn't, mealtimes were a struggle at first but then I figured it out - if I made him chicken cutlets parmesan I made myself tofu parmesan. If I made him bowtie pasta with grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, olives and feta cheese I scooped some out for myself before I added the chicken to the rest. At BBQ's I made grilled veggie burgers for me while still making him steak or burgers or chicken or ribs or hot dogs or whatever. I always made lots of sides anyway (veggies, rice, couscous, etc.) so I always had choices. Sometimes I'd just open a can of vegetarian re-fried beans and eat them spread on a flour tortilla with baby spinach leaves, tomatoes and hot sauce - it takes all of 2 seconds to make and really was no bother at all. I must admit though, that it eventually became difficult for me to touch or cook meat. Anyhoo, where there is a will there is a way and if eating less meat is where you're headed, it's certainly easy enough to accomplish. Get yourself a good vegetarian cookbook and find some recipes you like, discover prepared veggie foods you enjoy (veggie burgers, beans, etc.) and make is as easy on yourself as you can. Let me know if I can help! XO Allison -- posted by allisontyler
