» GeraldS_2 - The New Democratic Party Back in the sixties the labor power block deserted the Democratic Party where they had real pull. And about that time, the old guard reactionary Democrats from Dixie decided to become Republicans in name as well as action: the action part having been existant since the Civil War. A large part of this upheaval was due to a couple of liars named Nixon and Reagan.Labor is getting just what it deserved, a cold shoulder by a new democrat named Clinton, who recognized that his only chance for success was to steal the popular part of the conservatives platform, thereby gaining some of the big money that was previously the sole property of the GOP. The dust hasn't settled yet. Labor is awakening to the fact that they left their comfortable home and are now on their own, seeking a place to flop. And the informed and thinking group who were loyal to the Democratic party want nothing to do with the "New Democratic Party" which looks more like the old Republican party than the old Democratic. There's a big realignment about to happen and it will occur more rapidly when the economy falls into a new great depression. Some of us can see it coming. -- posted by GeraldS_2 » not_him_again - Labor votes for whoever seems to be in its best interest. Labor votes for whoever seems to be in its best interest. I don't suppose you can back up those allegations with any facts, can you? Well, here are some from a member of "labor".I think a short look at the record will confirm that the major industrial unions have endorsed the Democratic Presidential candidate for a very long time. I well remember the negative ads against Reagan in the UAW literature. In my opinion, if any fault is to be found here, it is sticking with a party now so hostile (at least at the top) to their interests. But we Buchananites are doing all we can to change that. If the democratic party is about to go pro-labor, why did Mr. Gephardt, who IS pro-labor, endorse Mr. Gore, who is a free trader? I'll tell you why, IMHO; because he was offered a shot at the speaker's job, and more importantly, because so many financial and business interests now have their hooks into BOTH parties. The main difference between the Dems and the Republicans now, at the top, are social issues like gun control, and abortion. When it comes to America-first policies, pro-labor trade tarriffs, they sound just like the Republicans you seem so worried about. I do however, agree, that there are still some pro-labor democrats in Congress. I voted for one. But he is not doing his best to ship our jobs to Mexico, he works for his constinuency. Contrast that with the individual you democrats worked so hard to keep in office. Just out of curiosity, how was it that Mr. Clinton found time to sell NAFTA and the WTO to the Congress, and yet couldn't pass a minimum wage increase when the Democrats had BOTH houses of Congress? While we are on the subject of Parties, here is a quiz; name the political party in power in the Presidency and both Houses of Congress when NAFTA and the WTO were approved? Now name the party in power when NAFTA extension was turned down?
It is not the case that labor abandoned the Democrats- the Democrats embraced internationalism, (remember Jimmy Carter?- he endorsed NAFTA too, as I remember), dropped protectionism, sold out the working man for free trade, I maintain, and lost their base. Clinton is only the latest of those who claim to be for working people, but are at heart hopelessly internationalist. The agenda he advocates is irreconcilable with the interests of industrial unions in the US. You want the working man's vote, return to protectionism, especially with low wage countries, or put in place wage parity. My UAW brothers and sisters are not the catspaws of new world order internationalists, and I will continue to tell them they have an alternative to so called "free trade". -- posted by not_him_again
