» thepres - US Navy expanded deployment of e-learning

I do not believe the cost benefit of the Navy's recent deployment to all mobile/deployed units is what they think it be. As QM1 mentioned in a recent article we have been supporting and educating our sailors diversely and effectively for many years. Accessibility will be a problem here and only a select motivated few will receive full benefit of the Navys' recent expansion. The problem is however that these individuals would have found or already have methods in place to support their learning goals! An example during my last deployment I set up my own MCSE training program, by researching selecting the best books available and setting up my laptop as a server to perform all lab work. I was able to work where and when I wanted to and successfully completed my MCSE through self study. No e-learning environment could have even come close to duplicating the quality of training I received. Perhaps a use based license model by ThinQ would be a more efficient use of our taxdollars!

» comesailaway - e learning

Hey, I see that this is an old discussion but I just stumbled across it. I'm currentlyusing e-learning to get industry wide technical certifications. I think it's a good thing, but certainly is not the replacement for actual instruction that some would like to make it. These types of computer based training are usually good enough to get you through taking a test and that's usually good enough to help you understand the terminology of the subject you're studying. Beyond that, only intense instruction and experience is going to help you learn anything.
