» gppaul - Terrorism: What are We Actually Fighting?

This is a hard story to speak on because every individual has one's belief about terrorism. My personal belief is that we are fighting for nothing. There should be no reason why people are dying everyday in Iraq. Yes, America is our country and is worth fighting for. But if that's the issue, the question still remains what are we fighting for? Whom do we sacrifice? the lives of the soldiers that risks a life everyday in Iraq. Or should this war ends and bring home the soldier that's still over there home safe?

This is an interesting question. First, I would say that we are not fighting terrorism in Iraq and we never were. Any terrorism there started after our invasion. Second, we here in the US have all but forgotten that we are still at war in Afghanistan. Actually, I thought that was a rather silly way to fight terrorism, as I think Osama bin Laden was a figurehead at best, but had we at least captured and tried him, it might have sent a message. Only, this administration seems to have gotten bored with that whole thing and let it drop.

In my opinion, "fighting" terrorism is like fighting an unruly child. It doesn't get you anywhere. While we like to think we could root out all the terrorists, the only thing we can really do is to take a reasonable amount of precaution and then go about our business, showing the would-be terrorists that they cannot throw our world into turmoil, distroy our economy, and cause us to go against the civil liberties our society has come to depend on.

Instead, we are doing just the opposite and harming ourselves far worse than terrorists ever could.

I think that both of you have missed the main idea of the article, which is that we can't fight "terrorism" and that the phrase is little more than political posturing. What we can fight is people who use the tactic, so that we're fighting terrorists, not terrorism.

Second, although terrorists work independently, they are supported monetarily, materially and philosophically by many governments, formerly Afghanistan and Iraq among them. Just like the North did to the South in the Civil War, if you cut off the funding and supply, eventually the organization will collapse. New technologies make this more difficult, of course, but the idea is sound. Hence our current involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Third, our economic realities, specifically our dependence on oil, make an active involvement in the middle east an absolute necessity. We haven't built a new refinery in the US since the 1970s and we can't survey or drill for new sources because of birdbrained environmental regulations which have tied the hands of American oil companies in making our own country more energy independent. Everything is interlaced. If we weren't so worried about our individual issues and looked more at the larger picture we wouldn't be in some of the situations we're in. But that's not how we work.

Now, here's a question for you. What do you think would happen if we retreated, pulled all of our military out from wherever they are worldwide, or maybe even just from the middle east? Would that help or hurt us?

It's bad enough to have a president constantly saying "war on terror", without having media people put the seal of approval on it by repeating his incorrect wording...with a straight face even!

Besides, everytime I hear Bush say those words, I automatically think he said that he is waging war on "Terra"... and I'm afraid he will win. sad
Good ole Terra Firma doesn't seem so stable these days with the glaciers melting.

I really no not understand what we are fighting for. There is no excuse for why our people are out there dying everyday. They say this and they say that. Does the president have feelings for others? Our people need to be set free to come home. There are families out there suffering and can not sleep at night. We need to trust in God.

I to actually often get confused over what the war in iraq is actually about. It seems to me that the War on Terrorism is just a term used to hide a hidden political agenda for the US government. I really dont know anything except the fact that our soldiers are over there dying and it seems to me that there is no cause othere than the US government trying to force it's ideological beliefs upon another country. I belive the War on Terror needs to end and we need to rethink what we call are political agendas

After reading the article it has given me a better understanding of who/what were fighting, and why were fighting them. In the article it states that harm is being done due to lack of understanding and trust. But, in the same essence iy's enough trust to cause war to get what you want. Why would they want anything on thee americans end if they do trust us. It's a catch twenty- two as many who say. They have nothing to do and to much anger inside. My closing remarks, suggest that we do find a terrorist tactic, and handle our light work. Because, little as you know the longer our troops say over there the less of our men wnd women will come home. And that's terrorism beyoung it's self. Because they will still be killing the amaericans off.
