» Jojo - j-chokes

Hi Leda

I enjoyed your article. I love j-chokes and try to have them in the garden at all times. However, a few years ago I managed to pretty much eradicate them by digging them out so thoroughly. The following year I got some more tubers from my Uncle and put them in the fridge for a few weeks until I had my spot prepared. Well, 2 years later I found the 3 rotted tubers in the back of a crisper (please don't report me to the crisper police). They looked dead, but I planted them anyway, and one grew and now I have j-chokes again.

As a side note, I have never had them flower here. It seems our season is too mild or too short to produce blooms, although one November I did notice a few buds forming at the very tops of the stems. We had had a long hot summer. Thats the closest I ever got to growing j-choke flowers, but it doesn't ever seem to have affected the harvest.
