Great article. My kinda mystery.
Richard and Debbie Senate have written an interesting book on this case called Psychic Solutions of the Lizzie Borden case. In their solution it is sister Emma who is the culprit.

Ol' Lizzie had a Providence (RI) Police record for shoplifting at Tilden Thurber Jewelers. She was a known "klepto" but her father had arrangements with Fall River merchants that any goods taken would be paid for or returned.

Almost all the Fall River police officers were attending a day-long outing at Rocky Point Park in Warwick, RI. I believe the constable who responded to the Borden house was the only one on duty.

August 4, 1892 was the hottest day of the year. Imagine burning a dress in the kitchen stove in that kind of weather.

I understand that the Fall River PD had no lock-up facilities for women so Lizzie spent much of her pre-trial time at the Taunton (MA) State Hospital.
