» Dan_Ellsworth - A big three?

A former pastor of our church, skilled, devout, and organized, once said that the had three irreducible duties from the Discipline: Preaching the Word, administration of sacraments, and providing for the order of the church (overall administration). I haven't checked that, but it seems possible, as thorough as this guy was.

In practice, what pastors do varies some around a common core. Local churches tend to have their "unwritten constitutions", as I irritably called them once when I tripped over one. (I wasn't a pastor; just a layman in one of the many church offices there are.)

The Pastor's ex-officio position as Chairperson of Nominations and Personnel (Name might be obsolete.) is especially important because the pastor might have confidential information from counseling or other activities that affect the fitness of a candidate for church office.

It's been too long; I thought I'd drop in and chatter for a while.
