» weaponx - Shin-Splints

Hi guys, i have shin splints or at least i think i do. I have pain on the inner lower part of my tibialis. I am an athlete currently competing in the 400m. I don't know how to describe the pain but i think dull would be the best one i've seen used here so far. Sometimes after training when i get back home, i get too much pain just standing up. Lying down would cause less stress but the pain is still in there.. the dull feeling.
I am wondering how can i treat this injury.
In the last season i tried taping and it helped my training a lot, it removed the pain when running. But i'm afraid that my legs may become too dependant on the tape and i might cause the injury to become more serious. please help me.
I also ice a lot but sometimes the mere weight of the ice causes pain in that region

» JLeighK - Can shin splints be caused by a sprained ankle?

I am fifteen years old and I found out a few months ago that I have a shin splint in my right leg. Before that, I thought that the pain in my shin was a remnant of when I sprained my right ankle over a year ago. Now, my ankle still bugs me a bit, but the major problem is the shin splint! I often find it acts up as much as it wants to, as often as it wants to. It acts up for no reason at all most of the time! I rarely do any running and sometimes I have to sit out of my gym class because it hurts too much.
A few times it has hurt me so much that I debated getting a really sharp knife and cutting off my leg. Really!! Earlier today, it felt like someone was scraping slivers off of the bone!
My question is, can shin splints be caused by a sprained ankle? Because the shin splint only appeared after I sprained my right ankle but before I could run again.

Thanks!

» bluepearlvinca - shin splints

I have some helpful hints for those who have shin splints. I got shin splints last year and have gotten them again this year. Some of the things that cause shin splints are running on different surfaces; your calf muscle working harder than your shin, causing the muscle to separate from the bone; bad running shoes that don't support the arch of your feet; running on your toes; and abnormal running style. To help the shin splints go away, apply ice after workout. Don't work the muscles too hard until after the shin splints are completely gone. For an exercise, try walking on your heels with your toes pointed on the inside. Be sure to stretch properly before AND after running, jogging, or walking. To exercise those muscles, stand in the lunge position; tap the forward foot up and down as fast as you can for as long as you can. Repeat for other foot. Another exercise is to stand on the floor, next to a table or chair for support. Rise up on the toes of both feet and hold for 2 - 5 seconds. Repeat 10 - 20 times. Do 2 - 3 sets per day and work up to 50 heel raises per set with each leg. To stretch those muscles, again, stand in the lunge position, this time stretching your back foot. Try to keep your back heel down. To steady yourself, use your hands on the ground or against a wall. You can also tape your shins before exercising. I've never tried it but I know it really helps. You can talk to your track coach or other person who knows about track and ask them about taping techniques.
I hope you all get rid of those shin splints!! I know how painful they can be and they can stop you from performing your best or from performing at all.

In response to message posted by JLeighK:

The actual spraining of an ankle doesn't cause shin splints, but maybe the way you walk with your sprained ankle upsets those muscles around your shin.

There are a number of things it could be. The best thing to do is to go to your doctor's and get it checked out. You're in pain for a reason--it's your body's way of saying something's wrong and it needs fixed.

» livetorun - Re: Shin Splits

I had a shinsplint back in February that began in my calf muscle and wrapped around the front of my leg. I had little bumps running down the inside of my leg along the bone that hurt to touch. I could barely walk let alone run on the one leg. I took two weeks off of running and that did not help, so I resorted to something I had never tried before--massage therapy and acupunture. The massage seemed to help a little, but it was acupuncture that did the trick. After the acupuncture I was running the next day and I have been training for a marathon. I truly recommend the treatment. I have not returned since to it, but I have recently sprained an ankle and I am going to try it again.

yo a word of advice, always stretch before doing anyhting athletic no matter what, it hurts you even more not to. i have shin splints as well, i find that soaking my leg in a big bucket of hot water for about 30 minutes really helps when the pain gets really bad.

Hi I need some help on a quick fix for shin splints! I've had a slight pain on the inside of my lower legs for sometime but ingnored it! I now know that it's more then likely shin splints. I played basketball last night and I was in so much pain that I could hardly run let alone walk. My problem is that I only have about 5 weeks to get back up and running please can anyone tell me a week by week plan on getting back to some degree of normal! Thanks
