G'day Donna! firstly, thank you so much for sharing this! And can I find the right sources when I want them? Never!!! But I remember reading somewhere that Anne Boleyn had an Irish Wolfhound named Urien. Antonia Fraser writes on page 173 of her "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII' that the king paid up when Anne's 'greyhound' killed a cow during one of their hunts. I believe this may have been the wolfhound- especially as my sister tells me that this is what 'wolfhounds' were known as during this time period. Anne Boleyn's great grandfather was an Earl of Ireland (Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormonde), and at one stage the plan seemed to be for Anne to marry James Butler, in hope of solving the Boleyn's 'Butler inheritance.' So the 'Irish' connection was important to the family. But back to dogs! The sources I do have tell me that Anne possessed a lap dog she loved greatly called Purkoy. When it died of a fall only the king dared to tell her.

Now I'm off to your column to share with you a Tudor dog poem!

Cheers! Wendy
