» P3G3C3 - strelitzia

Four 21" specimen White Birds have recently come to be in my care. One of the four is splaying out on me... it looks like it needs to be staked....Does anyone know what might be the cause of this....thanks in advance for any advise. c.c

Hello again. I asked my friend Bryan who is absolutely fantastic with helping me to find the answers to trickier questions. He says that if you could give a little more information on plants that it would be helpful.

When did the plant begin to do this? Were there any other symptioms? Pests? Leaf color changes?

Did your watering or fertilizing schedule change?

He says if it
isn't rotting, he would assume it is just natural
variation.... one of the plants probably just has
longer leaves, and is falling down a little. One suggestion he made is that maybe higher light levels would strengthen it and shorten the leaf petioles.

If you need more help, please let me know.

» gbaker9 - Bird of Pardise in Winter

Hi, I just purchased a 5' Bird and it is spring in Austin, TX. Concerned about planting outdoors here. Winters typically are dry without much frost or ice, but on occasion we get some. Does anyone recommend against planting outside? My first choice is to plant it outside and cover in case of frost... The avg temp is around 36 low and 55 high?

Thanks, -G.

» limcd - Bird of Paradise has Sticky Leaves

I've had an indoor Bird of Paradise for about 5 years. Lately I've noticed that the leaves have a sticky residue. It's getting on the carpet and other furniture. I also started other Bird of Paradise plants from seeds. They are about 2 years old and I'm starting to see the same sticky residue. What can I use to clean the leaves and am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Do you know what aphids are? My first thought is that your plants may be infested with aphids.

» newbird - In house bird of paradise

I just purchased 2 10 feet tall bird of paradi. I would like to put them inside the house next to the window. The room that they will go into has a ceiling that is 11 feet tall. How do I keep the bird from growing taller, but continue to stay a live and produce flowers. This is my first time ever dealing with plants, yap I am just like my name says a newbee. Thanks for the help on this, I appreciate any information.

Hello. I do not think I would try to grow it outside unless you are prepared to provide extra protection on the nights that drop below 40 degrees. This could be done with a blanket, a make shift cold frame or in a variety of other ways.

Hi,
I am from Austin, TX too!
I just purchased 3 of those plants. I am going to put them in the ground and cover them if need be in the colder months.
However, I heard from someone that you should plant them facing east to west because they will twist their leaves trying to follow the sun if ydon'tont... I am trying to confirm this information and so far haven't had any luck. I can tell by looking at one of them that the leaves are twisting, the other two are not. I would like to know what you find out. Thanks
