Silver dollar question: Black dots

I have 3 silver dollars. Occasionally, one of them will show a black spot slightly above and behind the gill area. This spot is about the size of a pea. Can anyone tell me what this spot is? They seem to chase each other, or be more active when this spot is present. I've enjoyed the articles here very much!
