Silver dollar question: Silver fish pregnant or dying?

My family has 2 silver dollar fish, and we have had them for over 8 years. Just recently, our female fish has gotten much larger, at first we thought she was pregnant, but we are not so sure. Her eyes began bugging out today, so we think she may be sick. Is this a possibility? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
