In response to Black dots posted by davenh58:

hi dave-just to let you know that i too have silver dollars and from time to time they do develop the black marks you speak of-however they dont seem to prove to be harmfull to the fish-although its generally only one of the pair that has them.i have noticed that during this period the one with the black marks often becomes aggresive toward its fellow dollars.also sometimes turning completely on its side and"shimmering" alongside the others.aswell as the marks behind the gills mine develope a jet black edge to the tail-inplace of the red colouration.for all i'm not sure as to why this happens ive noticed it only occurs in dollars of a mature size, but ultimatley they come to no harm and usually calm down within a couple of days.its just a shame the rest of them have to put up with his mood swings as they really do seem puzzled by the change in their tank mate.wether or not its to do with the urge to breed remains to be seen as i have yet to experiance offspring from my dollars-which are now between two and three years old.so there you go-hope this helps but its definatley not parasitic activity-more like letting them know he's the head of the pack.any further probs let me know and i'll be happy to try and help.

hi davenh58
i have a small skool of dollars 5 females and 1 large male , the females quite often show black dots just above the gills and also get a black band right through the tail with red fins this is just prior to them rubbing against each other and trying to breed and nothing to worry about im sure as i now have baby dollars swimming around in my tank
hope this helps

Hey Jetopaz
I see no one has replied but i was wondering if youve noticed any growth in the fins since, or if you did anything. cause i have one dollar and his fins are slowly deteriorating, but then again he is the only one in with a bunch cichlids but its weird cause they seem to be getting along with him quite well. Anyway let me know.

i have had 2 silver dollars for 2-3 weeks (i got 1 more a few days ago) when i got my 1st ones there fins were fine but a few days later i woke up to see that there fins were damaged. is there any way to make them regenerate faster ( they swim fine with damaged fins i am just concerned that they might get some sort of infection there in a. 29 gallon tank i plan to move them into a 65 gallon tank (how many silvers can i fit in a 65 gallon tank)

» jstrauss - my silver dollars look sick

i recently added "proper pH 7.0" and changed out some of the water . . i also used a tank clearing solution... and i try to change out the water as often as i can (about once every 2 weeks)

i introduced an Angel fish.. about 2" with 3 silver dollars, among other things.. the last time i changed the water my two year old barbs died.. then i had to replace them with 2 more silver dollars so the one left would have company.. i bought an algae eater that is now dead with having plenty of algae left to eat... had it for about 2 weeks..

question is how do i keep the silver dollars alive? they've got many white spots all over them and they're tending to almost rest on the bottom of the tank... the large one and one of the smaller ones will eat, but there is one that has stayed in hiding... my guarami's look healthy and the angel fish is healthy.. i also have a dragon fish and a dinosaur eel.. they all look fine, but my silver dollars are dying! Please help!

Sorry about your fish. I have had 1 silver dollar for 2 years and he had 2 white skirt buddies and some neon tetras that he liked. I tried other fish but other species died or jumped out of the tank. So the white skirts his buddies died of old age and he looked sad so I got him a gal female silver dollar and he is happy again. I have tried other fish including other silver dollars but he did not hang with them like this new female I currently have. It may be stress due to different fish varieties even if they are known to be compatable. So I have 2 silver dollars and 4 neons and they seem very happy and healthy. Sounds like fungus was the spots, try 1/2 dose fungas clear. I have had him the longest of the other fish. I keep the temp around 78 (have a heater so no drastic temp changes), the ph, water softness, etc. all in check. My water is too base like so bottle water helps along w/ph down. I always use aqua safe and 1/2 dose of water safe tablets.Hope that helps smile

Oh yeah, the cleaner could of been rough on the silvers? I never used that, so I am not sure about that. I stay away from as many chemicals as possible inside and outside the tank, including air freshners and windexes close by the tank. They are so timid and need to relax they like the lights dim but some times I turn the light on. Since they are scared mine seem to be happy with small fish. The angels could be picking on them when your not looking too.

» xosoccerchick04 - Silver fish pregnant or dying?

My family has 2 silver dollar fish, and we have had them for over 8 years. Just recently, our female fish has gotten much larger, at first we thought she was pregnant, but we are not so sure. Her eyes began bugging out today, so we think she may be sick. Is this a possibility? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
