SILVER DOLLARS: Part I: What is a Silver Dollar?Read the article this discussion is about

» Jerseycitysteve - Another fine article Another homerun Cliff!IMHO Silver dollars, bala sharks and tin foil barbs make fine schools in BIG Tanks with Oscars or other large cichlids. The silverdollars are the only one of those fishes from S America though. Cheers, Steve -- posted by Jerseycitysteve » cliff_aliperti - Re: Another fine article In response to message posted by Jerseycitysteve:Thanks again, Steve! Another thing I like about Silver Dollars that I neglect to mention is they appear almost velvet-like, while other big fish like the Bala Sharks or Tin Foil Barbs, are scaly. Gives the Silver Dollars a more regal appearance in my eye, but then that's personal I guess. -- posted by cliff_aliperti » cliff_aliperti - Re: Hi Cliff! In response to message posted by ruby:Hey Ruby, thanks for the compliment. Take a look at the ventral fin (the fin on the underside of the fish)--in males it will be a little longer and in the most common species be colored red at the edge. Hope that helps! Part 2 of the Silver Dollar article will be coming in a few days, hope you come back for it! -- posted by cliff_aliperti » Kahli_Michelle - Help! I have a mature silver dollar, and I just found him up side down in my tank... His belly is out of the water like a bubble. He is still alive, but when he swims he has to struggle to get up the right way, constantly fighting from floating to the surface. He is swimming around in circles, all over the tank... he always comes to a stop up side down and sits there for a while... then does it again. Sometimes he sits there for a long time... only moving his mouth. Is it something he will pull through from, or am I going to lose him? I'm very worried, and I've never seen this before. Do fish get gas? Sorry for the rushed post, but I'm sure you understand why...I would appreciate any advise offered. Thanks! -- posted by Kahli_Michelle
