» Jerseycitysteve - My son wants a BGK and I an Oscar

My eight year old son fell in love with the black knife he saw Azelea Aquariums in Richmond, VA. We're looking to set up a large tank.

I've wanted an Oscar for years.

You said you keep your BGK in a community tank. Great article. What kinds of fish do you keep? What about a tiger oscar?

Thanks

I have an Oscar that's about 6-7 inches long right now (latest article), but he's in a separate tank from the Black Ghost. However, I can't foresee any problems in keeping the two together, and would do it myself if I trusted the Severum I have sharing a tank with the Oscar, around the Black Ghost. The Oscar grows a little faster, but a properly fed Ghost will grow quick too! You're probably going to want at least a 65-75 gallon tank for the two of them though. Thanks a lot for the compliment on the article!

Thanks Cliff. You do write well.

What fish do you keep with a black knife? Any mild mannered cichlids?

BTW 75 gal is one big tank! wow! Well let's see what happens.

Right now, my Ghost is in a 35-gallon hexagon tank. I have a long flat rock at the bottom of the tank, raised about an inch over the gravel. He hangs out under there and then swoops to the top of the tank at feeding time.

Right now, this tank is overcrowded, but I'm keeping up with my weekly water changes and all is well. So far, so good. Here are his roomies:

7-Silver Dollars (appx. 3-1/2-4 inches each)
3-Keyhole Cichlids (appx. 2-1/2 inches each)
3-Clown Loaches (appx. 3-1/2-4 inches each)

I just picked up the Keyholes about a month ago, it's the first time in a few years that they were made available around here.

In my 65-gallon tank I have:

1-Oscar
1-Green Severum
1-Orange Pike
3-Pictus Catfish

Like I said, I do think the Ghost would be fine with an Oscar. Oscars are usually pretty tame.

Good Luck!
