Hello Doug,

... and welcome to the Suite University Community. I have several topics here now and love the chance to share ideas and courses at SU.

I loved your aquarium article. We used to have a big tank when we lived in NJ - and had all kinds of fish. It was at floor level, so my cats did enjoy watching from time to time, especially feeding time as Mo said!

Maybe we should look into getting another tank - couldn't hurt my BP - although I think petting my cat also helps in that regard!

Great article - glad to have you over here at the SU COI!

Irene

Graceful and passive like me you mean? Just kidding.Graceful, I must say any species of angel fish, there's just nothing I've ever seen that can compare to their grace. They're like little dancers doing a miniature Swan Lake. Passive, I would have to say the King of the Aquarium, Discus.Hope that answers your questions Maureen, and just for safety sake, the meanest fish are called Hornet Tilopia

» biogardener - Not the noise by the vibration

It isn't the noise of the pumps which bothers me, because I can never hear it. It is the vibration. I have the same trouble with our pulse furnace. I don't hear it, but after 20 years with it, I still wake up at night when it comes on, because I am super-sensitive to vibrations. Our internal organs vibrate sympathetically at different wave lengths, so if a vibration of a motor happens to be in sync with an organ, I am in trouble.

This supersensitivity with me comes from growing up in air raids. We were conditioned to wake up to certain vibration which signalled danger, especially those of the planes which dropped bombs. We felt those in our sleep even before the planes reached our city, and then we would hurry to a bomb shelter.

I only use filters which lead the aquarium water through a charcoal filter and then drop it back into the tank as a waterfall. They have no vibration at all, and the waterfall introduces lots of air into the water. I can relax with those, because I love the sound of the falling water, even when there are no fish in the tank.

Traute, I never realized the conditioning you had to develop during the war. It makes sense.

The back filters are quite good and they do give you the sound of a waterfall when the water returns back to the tank. I have one in my Parrot Fish tank. They are easy to clean. Just replace the charcoal bag and rinse out the sponge.

In tanks with small fish, I use a sponge filter with a pump. The intake pipe on the back filters are a little too strong, even with a screen.

» Douglas DuHamel - What is the oldest living fish know to man?

It is called a rough rock fish living anywhere up to 200 hundred years! Just a piece of totally unless fish trivia!

Mo, the most fish I enjoy as being stately and passive are the larger gouramies - the Gold, Pearl or Opal ones. THey are calm and easy community fish. Discus, as Doug says, are very stateluy, but they require expert care to help them be really happy. Whereas the gouramies do great in almost any conditions! Don't go with the dwarfs, BTW. My faves are the Golds for their outrageous beauty and grace.

» desertblue - parrot cichlids

oh, I re-read your last email about parrots - I LOVE parrot cichlids! Actually, I love all South American Cichlids. THey seem to have so much more personality than the African ones. They become like pets...I have two sets of Oscars and parrots that think they are mates and they actually follow me around the room. Very cute. smile
