Irene, Hi!

Husband and I will be traveling to Ireland in mid-June to see gardens, of course...however, I was wondering how does a traveler, like myself, find a good handmade Aran sweater? I linger over pictures of those in Irish goods catalogs and I'd like to get myself a sweater or two while we are there. I am cynic and skeptic enough, however, to fear getting taken in by something mass produced and sold at a handmade price.

I'll be checking out some of your recommended related articles and am sure to be back with more questions as June approaches.

» Red - great tips...

Irene,

This is a fantastic article filled with great tips. Waterford Crystal is beautiful. I have seen it sold for hundreds of dollars here in Canada.

One day I hope to visit Ireland, as my ancestors came from there. Not sure exactly where. Need to do some research on the family tree.

Take care and thanks again for sharing these great tips.

Mary

I'm so glad to hear you are coming to Ireland. I hope you have a wonderful time and that my articles will be of help to you.

Aran jumpers can be found all over the place, of course but as you say you will want to get the genuine article. Look out for reputable stores like the Blarney Woolen Mills in Dublin or Cork, the Kilkenny Shop in Dublin or craft outlets in places like Spiddel, Galway. These places sell quality goods and have a good enough reputation to not let you down. Other good places to look are the craft shops in the tourist information centres or heritage centres. They are definitely not there to rip people off, it just wouldn't be in their interest to do so.

If there's anything else I can help you with I will certainly do my best. Just let me know.

Irene, Thanks so much for answering my question. As time approaches and I learn more about Ireland and pinpoint exactly where we'll be visiting, I'm sure there will be more questions.

It is good to know that places such as this are available. I'll be on the lookout for them.
In the meantime, are there any good movies about Ireland (modern or otherwise) that might be available here in the U.S. on videotape or DVD?
Thanks so much!

Do you mean general Irish made movies or a video about travelling here?

» Georgene A. Bramlage - Videos, etc

In response to message posted by Ireland:

I did mean general Irish movies...being in an academic community, we have several good video stores locally that stock items other than American...so I can probably find / borrow most anything.

It would be a plus if you knew of any travel videos...especially garden ones. I get many about English gardens through the British National Trust that I use for my community service horticulture courses. So, they are never not viewed.

OK, Irish films that I love:

There are some good travel videos available on Barnes and Noble (don't know any specifically about gardens though):

A Celtic Journey Through Time: A Short History of Ireland

Tapestry Series: Portrait of Ireland

Over Ireland

Globe Trekker: Ireland

Happy viewing!

Irene, No problem...I haven't exactly had loads of time to watch many videos these days :+)

Thank you for your list of suggestions...I am surprised to find that you like "The Quiet Man."
