» delgadofam - Questions about the program

My 11 yr old received the invitation. I have a few questions & concerns. Do the children really travel alone w/out a parent? I honestly do not feel comfortable about sending my child to Europe w/out my husband or myself? I don't even think he would travel w/out us. Our 2 kids & us are really close.

Yes, the students travel without their parents, and most always, they are fine. I have had a few students become homesick, but they are so busy and involved on the trip, it passes quickly. When they do get homesick, that is what we as leaders are there for; to help them out. The other thing that helps is the fact that groups meet once a month for six months before we travel, so everyone knows each other well before travel. The parents trust us and know that our reason for being there is to be with the kids.

My advice is to go to the invitational meeting and find out how this program works. It's an incredibly legitimate and safe program, and the students are the first priority. If you feel your child is not ready to travel without you, don't send them. It might be something for them as they get older.

I had a former student that I nominated for travel. He and his father came to the invitational meeting and he was excited and ready to travel. But after a couple of weeks of thinking about it, he decided that he didn't want to be away from home without his family, so he decided not to go. He thought about it the next year, but still decided not to go. His sister, however, went the first year she was nominated, and although they are a very, very close family, had no trouble being away from them for three weeks and had the time of her life.

What I'm trying to say is - it really depends on each child and how ready they are to do this. And you know your child best, and if you don't think they are ready to travel without you, don't send them. It might be something for a later age. And it might be something to start preparing for for another year.

Hello,

I was just reading up on the People to People group and ran across this thread. We just went to our meeting on Saturday and I was wondering.
If I don't feel my daughter is ready this year, will she be able to go next year???
Thanks!

Yes, she would be eligible to travel next year. Once she has been nominated, she will stay on the PTP roster and be sent an invitation next year. A lot of people wait a year for several reasons: maturity levels, saving up money, etc.

Absolutely not! Your interview time has nothing to do with being accepted or not! If there a lot of students that are accepted, a second delegation is formed to accomodate them! Good luck!
