Did anyone have any problems using a converter in Europe (France, Italy, or Greece)?? My friend told me this story of how even with the right converter and adaptor her straightner still melted?? And where did you get your converter, I started looking at Brookstone but all the converters seemed really heavy...and I'm trying to get light things because of the weight limit. Thanks for any help/advice you can give me

» travelisfun - what kind of phone should he use ?

Hi, my 10 year old son will be travelling to Australia next summer.
in terms of calling home, I was told that he should get a phone card and then wait in the line to use the pay phone to call home whenever the teacher leaders said they can call home. after a long day, I think he'll be too tired to wait in the long line of 36 students to get a chance to call. is this really the best way to do ? has anybody tried any other easier way to call home ?
thanks for the info

I bought an all in one converter at Radioshack. Buy one that converts the voltage for you. It is much easier. I have traveled seven times, and my converter has only broken once.

Phone cards are the easiest and probably the cheapest way of calling home. The only reason students are told to use the pay phone is because you are unable to call from anywhere else. Calling from a hotel is extremely expensive. The only other way I can think of, at his age, is have you call the hotel directly. Although talking to one's parents is a great thing when you are away from them, it is not important. People to People wants you to step out of your comfort zone and experience life on your own, away from your parents. I first traveled with People to People when I was twelve, and I only called my parents twice. People to People kept us busy from the morning to the evening, and we were having too much fun to want to wait at a pay phone. This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your son. Let him enjoy it. If you must talk to your son, or your son feels he must talk to you, I am sure you can find another way of communicating.

Has any brought a video camera? I am thinking about bringing one but i don't know if it would be a hassle to have to worry about a digital and video camera

I experienced that when I traveled to France on a family vacation as well. I luckily did not fry my flat iron (it is a very expensive one), but I did fry two converters...which at $15 per (minimum), is also an expensive lesson learned. I was pretty close to frying my flat iron though... On the second converter, I realized there was a very strong burnt smell coming from my flat iron.

When I traveled with P2P, I decided it was better to just pack product and go with the natural curls. Less worry...

In Australia, there is usually more than one phone at each resort that he can use to call home. Phone cards and pay phones are best because of the charges tacked on to using a phone that is in his room is pretty steep.

I am a leader in So Cal. Realistically, you shouldn't expect a phone call from him every night as it is. Primarily because they DO come home tired after a long day of excursions. We encourage our delegates to call every few days so it is easy to space out who calls on which nights.

P2P recommends the MCI Pre-paid phone card... simply because it works. They even make it convenient for you and provide you with an order form in your Parent Guide.

Hope this helps.

One of my delegates last year brought a small digital camcorder which also doubled as his regular still camera. It was very nice - sleek and compact. I'm sure it was very expensive. He was an exremely responsible 10 year old, and I believe his parents bought it for him early enough to where he was able to "practice" using it at home with all the different settings prior to leaving for our trip.
