» ccsunfun30 - people to people

We recently received this letter for my daughter. It has scam written all over to me. I can take my family to Australia for 10 days for just slightly more. How do you know who is caring for your children? Do you let them go with strangers at home? Would you send your most valued possession around the world alone? AT 10 or 11 years old. I am tremendously sceptical.

I went on the Austalia trip this past summer. I am 16 years old. I will tell you it is totally safe and not a scam. Everything is beautifully organized from start to end. The homestays are very safe, if not it is very easy to get out of it. To me it was worth the $5,000. You don't stay in crappy hotels and eat McDonald's. Most places we stayed in were resorts and we ate at some pretty nice restaurants. Everyone gets their own bed, no one has to sleep together or on the ground.

My step daughter did the same trip last summer, she was also through people to people.. it was roughly $5000.00.. she loved it... and as for the ambassodor families... they were all nice individuals... you have to remember that in England, people are much different than people from the US... maybe because of the culture.. we found that they were more polite and just plain nice.. smile

» micmac050 - ways to make the money

I recieved a letter in the mail about the PTP thing and my mom said I could go... but only if I could come up with a way to get the money. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on ways a 13 year old could come up with $2,000 (i already have the other 2,000)

I just got the letter in the mail as well and I am very interested. Some people I know have gone to Australia with the program and they said that all the home stay families have had ambassadors stay with them before and are all perfectly safe. He said its about 5,000 dollars but you can get companies (in town or your parents/relatives) to sponsor you. Some of the kids who have gone on the program even make websites about their trip which are very interesting to check out.

A reminder to all who read these posts. The People to People Student Ambassador program was founded by President Eisenhower in 1956 and has President George W.Bush as current International Honorary Chairman.

Student Ambassador delegations of 30–40 students are led by experienced educators who guide students in preparing for the program during orientation meetings focusing on travel tips, the culture of the destination, bonding as a group, etc.

Check out the organisation's website for full information on destinations at People to People

Stewart,

Do you have any idea why the program costs so much? When we hosted students we paid for everything except international and extended regional travel, pocket money, and clothing. We were allowed an additional tax deduction (IRS -USA).

We were a host family many years back (10 - 14 years) under two different programs...one good and the other not very good at all...fortunately for all concerned I've forgotten the names of both programs. Neither were the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

From a host prospective, we probably learned more as adults about people interactions than the students or our own children did smile

Any person, whether student or adult, host or guest, who does this kind of exchange needs great amounts of patience and humility as indeed travel usually humbles a person. Tact is not an unwelcome attribute either.

In closing, I might add that there must be some sort of a clearing house, kind of like consumer reports, where one cancheck out the pros and cons of various student-to-student programs. I do not know of any...

I can't answer your question about cost. However I expect to be in contact with an executive of the organisation within the next week or two.

Were you able to come up with the money for your trip and did you go? Do you have any advise for people who want to go? My 12 year old son, wants to go to China next summer but $5000 is alot of money.

I'm almost positive that a percentage of dollars goes to pay for delegate leaders cost although I cannot confirm this. I too feel that $6000 is a lot of money for 20 days and am not real comfortable with entrusting people that I do not know with the care of my child. I say $6000 because even though the tuition is $4995 there is the added cost of domestic air, passport, insurance and don't forget spending money and clothes. I wish there was more input from past ambassadors parents. I was told that all delegate leaders are certified teachers...Sorry gang, that means nothing to me. We have an awful lot of certified teachers here who are in jail for doing some not-so-certified things to our students. I need much more info on this and not from People to People.
