» Eldanuumea - Gandalf's knowledge of Saruman's loyalties

There are indications in the timeline I have that Gandalf had suspicions about Saruman's activities and motivations long before 3018. In Fellowship of the Ring, he seems to be taken by surprise at Saruman's treachery, though. In my recent fanfic on the "hidden" years of Aragorn, I have depicted Gandalf as having his doubts about what Saruman is up to, and this is largely based on the following timeline elements....
2953 - Last meeting of the White Council....Saruman feigns that he has discovered that the One Ring has passed down Anduin....Being jealous and fearful of Gandalf he sets spies to watch.....soon begins to keep agents in Bree and the Southfarthing. (from my Houghton-Mifflin edition, p.1064)
Someone has questioned elements of my stories in which Gandalf and Aragorn notice Saruman's agents in Eriador and worry over whether he is seeking the Ring or the heir. Am I mistaken to use the timeline as a basis for this instead of the actual Fellowship version, which is unclear? I am really trying to keep my stories accurate.

» desertblue - thx

A fascinating article, thank you. I had nearly forgotten what those early days of gaming were like...the old dank and dusty dungeons we were content to stumble around in.

It's been a while.

I can only share an opinion with you. I cannot correct or confirm your choices.

I believe that Gandalf and Aragorn were indeed aware that someone was watching the Shire (there are a few indications that they were aware of the spies), but they did not appear to understand that Saruman was behind all the activity.

» peppermint68 - the bakshi version of legolas

I would like to ask anyone who ever saw the Bakshi version of the F ellowship of the Ring? If anyone has,I would like to ask if Legolas was any where near the Legolas in PJ's version.Remembering his version of the hobbit the wood elves looked more like goblins than elves and the goblins looked more like blobs of slime. Also, do they have bad animation in th fellowship or did it get fixed?

I agree. Gandalf and Aragorn knew someone was watching the shire. Or else Aragorn wouldnt have been so rough with Frodo.

Bakshi did not do the animated "Hobbit". That was done by Rankin/Bass, who also did the animated "Return of the King". Was the animated Legolas much like Peter Jackson's Legolas? Well, they were both blonds. That's about all I recall of the animated one. Bakshi's Legolas replaced Glorfindel, whereas Jackson's Arwen replaced Glorfindel. Poor Glorfindel -- he's considered one of the better Elf characters in the book and he keeps getting left out of the movies.

"Poor Glorfindel" is soooo right. If there's a Heaven for fictional characters, poor Glorfindel and Bombadil no doubt spend a fair amount of time in a pub commiserating with each other for always getting left out.

I have the bakshi version on tape. All of his elves are. . . well, strange. They dress in VERY bright colors and white, they are brighter than everyone else, and they all have HUGE eyes. Bakshi's Legolas dressed in a very poofy white shirt w/ pinkish purple cuffs and a small pinkish purple cape. A full Critique of Bakshi's LotR (w/ a picture of his legolas) is available at www.flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/bakshi/bakshi.htm
All of Bakshi's orcs are very dark colored, and their features are blurred. The goblin elves were in the WB's Hobbit and RotK.
