Do Elves dream of eclectic sleep?Read the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » CunningVixen - It's true; It's true; in the Tolkien mythos, Elves were made to live in Middle-Earth along with everyone else, not isolated in Valinor. This would make Middle-Earth much more "homelike" to them, even if it wasn't so perfect. A good deal of Elvish sorrow might be that they can't have it both ways, the slow perfection of Valinor and the solidity and change of Middle-Earth. They've incorporated a double exile into their racial history.I very much enjoyed this article, Michael - thanks. One thing I find interesting about Tolkien's "backstory" is that he's attempted to create a working psychology of immortality. His discussions of elvish sleep, emotion, memory, etc. all point towards this. It's almost like a response to Swift's dystopian vision of immortality in Gulliver's Travels. I wonder how Tolkien's view of elvish sorrow might have changed if he'd dipped into some Asian studies - Buddhism and Taoism? -- posted by CunningVixen » cougar14 - Do the elves have a real language? I have heard that J. R. R. Tolkien had created a whole new language for the elves. I keep searching over the net to find this language but I can't find it anywhere. I want someone to tell me that they can give me info on where to find it. My email is killerheadhunter@hotmail.com-- posted by cougar14 » CunningVixen - Re: Re: It's true; I tried e-mailing you, but it crashed...don't know why. Anyway. Here’s a website for you with details of Elvish languages. There were more than one! Enjoy!http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/ The site’s name is Ardalambion. I know about this site because there’s a link to this on Michael Martinez’s main page. So thank him, not me! -- posted by CunningVixen » Cool_Beanie - I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!I am absolutely crazy about Orlando Bloom !!!!!!! He is soooooooooo hot ! Does anyone feel the same ? lol I want his phone # Please, tell me everything about him !!! -- posted by Cool_Beanie » Michael_Martinez - Re: I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! In response to message posted by Cool_Beanie:Aside from some stage work and a small role as a "rent boy" in a movie about Oscar Wilde a few years ago, Orlando Bloom is a relative newcomer. He will surely get some opportunities after his work on "The Lord of the Rings". I don't have his phone number, but I can tell you that he is probably the hottest item in "The Lord of the Rings". We sell posters on Xenite.Org to help pay the bills. Over the past five weeks, there have been about 5,000 click-throughs on our LoTR posters. Of those, almost 2,000 have been for the (usually) sold out Orlando Bloom poster. I noticed just yesterday that AllPosters.Com had finally restocked it. Let's see if I can insert the poster image and link here. Buy it at AllPosters.com -- posted by Michael_Martinez » jila25 - Re: Re: I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! In response to message posted by Michael_Martinez:I would not choose to be immortal after reading this excellent article, Arwen's choice to be mortal is understandable, even without Aragorn to be there for her, which of course he is. I see something of why Elves can die of grief (or sorrow and regret), and do not envy them the uncertainy of what becomes of them after the end of the world. Also, a question, if elves are meant to dwell on earth, why do those that remain have to fade? Should they not be able to continue here? Are some of the younger elves still here, but our mortal eyes do not see them for what they are? Can they come back from where ever it is they sail to? -- posted by jila25 » Michael_Martinez - Re: Re: Re: I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! In response to message posted by jila25:The whole fading business is very complex, and not really clearly explained. However, it appears that in various texts Tolkien always intended for the Elves to give way to Men. They had a different time than Men. It is a part of their great tragedy that they resisted that fate, and tried to cheat "death" (such as it is for an Elf), just as such rebellious acts are a part of Man's tragedy. -- posted by Michael_Martinez » Harlech2 - Re: Re: I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! In response to message posted by Michael_Martinez:Question: Is it Orlando Bloom they all seem to love or Legolas??? Don't know if I'm doing this right as I'm new to this kinda of internet thing but I would like to say I love your Articles, Michael Martinez, on Tolkien and his world!! Thanks a lot for sharing them with us. -- posted by Harlech2 » Michael_Martinez - Re: Re: Re: I love Orlando Bloom !!!!!! In response to message posted by Harlech2:I think, based on the volumes of email I received about both the elf and the actor, that the fans who love Orlando and Legolas love them both. Thanks for the compliment on the articles. -- posted by Michael_Martinez « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
