Most of Michael's articles are 'historical' or 'speculative', but this article falls within the bounds of philosophy. On the whole, these are my favorite. Michael's writing is good, but the real reason is the material. Michael challenges commonly held opinions and finds support for the 'heresy'. That kind of non-obvious challenge, hidden by Tolkien in his work for us to discover, is the true treasure of the Professor's work.

That is Tolkien's Silmaril. We can try to 'possess' it, but then we miss the point. Its beauty is intangible.
