MM"There are no captains among the Hobbits."
In the scouring of the shire we read that 'at the top of the list stood the names of Captains Meriadoc and Peregrin'. of course this seems to be a one off title occasioned by the [by Hobbit standards] warriors returning from great travles. But they had the concept.

As to why the 'hidden fastness' was located at the angle, it is a straight line from Rivendell to tharbad. Perhaps the Dunedain [and the Elves who may have visited them] took boats from Rivendell, elf river-kayaks if you will, from Rivendell. This would have been a speedy form of travel [downstream] assuming the rivers allowed it. And the location at the angle would have placed them for much of the chieftanship between 2 primary communities that they were onvolved in, as peers as opposed to secret guardians.

Your point about some Orcs attacking Eriador is plausible, but why did the Dunedain not return to their watch of Bree and the Shire if the war had been won months before and the passage from Rivendell to Minas Tirith was safe enough for the future Queen. We do not hear of more Dunedain coming south with the Elves, so Gandlafs comment to Barliman that the Rangers had come back w/ them may have indicated that the group that went south was a large part of the Force. At least imagining that 1/2 would tay to guard the Angle , that gives 60 fighting aged men, another equal [or larger age group of Women [say 70 due to fortunes of war and fighting] and equal populations older and younger 130x3 _ 390 Dunedain . Just a guess, but Gandalf's comment and the absence of a direct presence in Bree and the Shire even after the rangers had returned months ago, granted that Gandalf may have advised the Rangers to let the 4 travellers clean up the mess as that is what he had 'trained them to do'.

As always I find your exscursion into the Arnorian culture to be well worth the while.

thanks,

lindil

In response to message posted by lindil:

I would find it hard to accept the term "Captains" for Merry and Pippin as an indication that the Hobbits maintained a military tradition in their time.

Interesting theory about use of the river between Rivendell and Tharbad. I'm not sure if the river was navigable (even by canoe or kayak) that far north.

'Your point about some Orcs attacking Eriador is plausible, but why did the Dunedain not return to their watch of Bree and the Shire if the war had been won months before and the passage from Rivendell to Minas Tirith was safe enough for the future Queen."

The future Queen was accompanied by a LOT of Elves, and their path (at least until they reached Eregion, where they would have taken the Redhorn Pass) may nonetheless have been guarded by the Dunedain.

Gandalf's comment to Barliman really has no bearing on who went where, except that in the last phase of something Gandalf and the Hobbits came back to something with some Rangers. That is, you never hear mention of the Rangers in "Many Partings", let alone afterward, until Gandalf makes his comment to Barliman. And they spent a fair amount of time in Rivendell, too (about two weeks).

And Barliman points out that no one was going to bother five armed travelers on the road, so where were the Rangers when Gandalf and the Hobbits were coming back from Rivendell?

Too much has been made of Gandalf's remark in Bree.

» Morbius_Drakkar - PLEASE HELP!!!

I am the true Heir of Isildur. My real birth name is Aragorn. I am searching for a picture of the flag that Aragorn flies when he returns to be king. It is of a winged helmet, with a tree under it, with stars under that and over the helm. I am planning to get a tattoo of this. Since my real name is Aragorn, I am the only one who can rightfully bear this mark. Someone, anyone, PLEASE HELP!!! If you know where I can find such a pic. E-mail me at: psychofreak_3@hotmail.com

As Boromir might be quick to point out, it takes more than a name to make one an heir to Isildur (and Elendil).

I've come across a couple of strange folk that feel Aragorn "stole" the throne of Gondor. According to this article, his claims seems pretty airtight. Weren't the stewards holding the throne in trust until a king would arise again? What problem could these people possibly have with Aragorn/s claim? Have I missed something?

In response to message posted by Eldanuumea:

Some people cook up what I can only call very strange and unsupportable theories. However, the theories of politics are legion, and I think it can rightfully be said that political motivations find ways to forge their own facts.

One must accept that, for Aragorn's right to the throne to exist, the Stewards would have to retain a measure of integrity which spanned generations. That integrity would vindicate the Dunedain of Gondor, who had gone through a period of darkness. The long separation might be viewed as a period of purification for both the royal house and the people.

The right of kingship was founded as much in spirituality as in political reality.

» Myshka - Was Arvedui Impetuous?

Greetings Gentles

Please see http://tolkien.cro.net/humans/chronag.ht...

this chronology states that Arvedui and Firiel were married in 1940, but later it says that Aranarth was born in 1938. Were Arvedui and Firiel impetuous? Or did the keepers of that site just make a mistake? Can somebody point me to sources for that info? Thanks! Myshka
