One must accept that, for Aragorn's right to the throne to exist, the Stewards would have to retain a measure of integrity which spanned generations. That integrity would vindicate the Dunedain of Gondor, who had gone through a period of darkness. The long separation might be viewed as a period of purification for both the royal house and the people.
The right of kingship was founded as much in spirituality as in political reality.
