In response to message posted by Michael_Martinez:

Let's say I'm in Middle-Earth and someone is uttering the name "Legolas Greenleaf." Would I, in fact, be hearing "Legolas" and the Westron translation of "Greenleaf?"

» Michael_Martinez - LEGOLAS' AGE IS UNKNOWN

The age that people keep running into for Legolas -- 2932 years -- is just something made up for the movies. It has no relevance whatsoever to anything written by J.R.R. Tolkien. There are TWO Legolas characters: the one in the book and the one in the movie.

Generally, my essays deal mostly with the characters in the books.

As far as Haldir is concerned, what you have found is probably all there is. I have never found any more information on (the Haldir of the book) than was published in The Lord of the Rings. The Haldir in the book is not very much like the Haldir in the movies.

» sepdet13 - A little more about Legolas (well, a lot more)

I love this article, Michael. It's the only one I've found with a lot of content. UNTIL NOW. Hopefully I've managed to add a few more details to the picture, which you've already covered so well. I tried to ferret out EVERYTHING from Tolkien that we actually know about the boy, or can infer from his family's history. If I get too many hits I will have to take it down and find someone to host it, but until then ;) -- http://www.darkshire.org/~sepdet/goodies...

» sepdet13 - Legolas of Mirkwood "Prince Among Equals" Article...

CORRECTION. If all the Bloom-fans in the world hit my friend's server it'll go down, so I just gave in and bought a domain and web host. The new, improved, comprehensive "All you wanna know about Legolas that Michael Martinez hasn't already covered so well" article is here: http://www.station187.com/istad/tolkien/...

Michael, I hope you don't mind my advertising it on your lovely page, but hopefully it complements your great work. smile

» Nimloth_of_CoE - Speaking of Legolas

Came across this great article via Sepdet's great article. Wish I could write great articles like that smile.
My theory why Legolas triggers so much speculation (disregarding his blue eyes): For one thing, it is precisely because Tolkien has given us so little about him. All other characters are described in detail and pretty much finished. Secondly, his royal background notwithstanding, he is NOT a high and mighty Elven lord but much more down to earth and mingles with commoners, be they man, hobbit or even dwarf. Elrond or Galadriel are way out of reach in some different sphere from us mere mortals. Legolas, however, you can almost reach out and touch, he's more the buddy type. Don't we all secretly wish we were as beautiful, skilled and heroic as the Elves? Well, having an Elf pal like Legolas is perhaps the closest thing ...

In response to message posted by Nimloth_of_CoE:

Hail & Well-Met,
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to share your thoughts.
Legolas has become more than a bit of a cult hero since his portrayal by Orlando Bloom but he has always fascinated LOTR readers as the sole Elvish presence in the Fellowship.
You're right as rain that he's not a high and mighty Elf lord like Elrond or Glorfindel. But that might be expected as his people are Avari and had refused the call to hang out with Manwe. That's what you might call down-to-Middle-Earth.
Cheers,
Palandiliar
