» Sherni - Legolas' name

Hi, I'm new around here so I'm sorry if my question sounds a bit silly. It's something one of my students ask actually. You see I'm from Indonesia, where English is not the native language. I'm a 27 year-old English teacher and being a fan of Tolkien, I sometimes try to incorporate Tolkien-related things into my lessons. Thanks to the movies, it was a much easier job than before :-) Anyway, I 've been discussing Legolas with my students (high school students) and of course I got questions about his age, hair color and so on, which I've been able to answer thanks to Mr. Martinez' articles, which I enjoy very much. But one of my students asked me why Legolas is called Legolas Greenleaf when "Legolas" already means "green leaf", and I couldn't quite answer that. I wonder if anyone could help me with that. Thanks

Sherni

» Asalie - Legolas, Smaug, and a Timeline

First of all, I was wondering if anyone could give me a timeline of all the events that happened in Tolkien's stories; it'd be much appreciated.

Secondly, it was sated in Martinez's article about Legolas that it was possibly he accomapnied the elvenking to Smaug's cave. When did this happen? The only experience I had with The Hobbit was when I played Bombur in the musical, so it probably skipped this element entirely.

Also, when exactly did Smaug goto Erebor? And what happened? And why?

Thanks for your answers.
~A

In response to message posted by Asalie:

I apologize for not responding sooner. I was ill over the holidays, traveling, and have been working on my newest book.

The English language is filled with words which we call compound words; they were originally phrases (such as "cannot" which started out as "can not"). The capitalization of "Greenleaf" is an Anglicized style (Tolkien was translating "Le + golas" literally as a proper name). Thus, "Greenleaf" is technically not different from "green leaf" (in terms of meaning).

The name "Greenleaf" does actually occur in English literature (although I don't know if any families still bear it). In Sir Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Little John assumed the name "Reynold Greenleaf" when he participated in an archery contest and subsequently took service with the Sherriff of Nottingham. I don't know how old that traditional story is.

Hope that helps.

» Michael_Martinez - Legolas at Erebor

The article speculates on possible life events Legolas might have experienced. There is no proof that he actually accompanied his father to Erebor in Third Age year 2941.

First of all, thank you for your response.
Secondly, good luck on your book.

Also, I have one more question; despite much research, I have found nearly no information on the elf Haldir. Can you share what you know?

Thanks,
Asalie

Legolas was born in 87 of the third age witch makes him 2932 years old. he was young enough not to be born at the time of last alliance that was a few years before he was born.

» ice_ur - Legolas History

I'm new to this site, and began reading FOTR last year. I've seen the films, and am curious about the Elf character Legolas Greenleaf. I'm hopeing someone out there will have some info for me on Legolas' bio.
Does he have any other family besides King Thranduil? Like brothers or sisters or what happened to his mother? Is there any specific event besides being one of the nine walkers? Anything that happened before his journey?

I would appreciate any backround on him. I'm trying to figure the character out, and can't seem to find much info on him. And if anyone know's where I can find more info, that'd be great!
Thanks!
