ALL MINE!!!!!! -- posted by LegolasLuver » CunningVixen - Thoughts on the Phenomenon I check into this web site about once or twice a week to see what new Tolkien-scholar-level discussions are going on. Instead of these posts, discussion is getting...rather focused on the pulchitrude of one portrayal in the picture. (takes deep, patient breath)I'd like to try and say a few thoughtful things about why fans have gone loco for Legolas. It's not a new thing. When I was a young teen, I was in love with Legolas too -- but with the character from the pages of the books, the one who has a long list of positive characteristics and no inconvenient girlfriends. All the women I've seen the movie with have also confessed that they fell for Legolas when they read the books as girls. Something about this character clicks for girls and women. What exactly was Tolkien's intention with this character? Based on some of the Tolkien source material I've read, he seems a bit vague about it at times. I remember once reading someone else's essay that proposed that Legolas was a useful way to make the reader feel the enchantment of the Quenya, and then feel sorrow at what Middle-Earth is losing when they leave. Would Tolkien have been pleased or displeased by our infatuation? -- posted by CunningVixen » desertblue - Re: Thoughts on the Phenomenon In response to message posted by CunningVixen:Interesting thoughts, Vixen. I never fell for Legolas, mainly because the Elves seem a higher caste than humans, and above reach. Also, remember the price for loving a mortal. Who would want to rob an elf of his immortality? Best not to open that can of worms, the guilt would likely destroy the relationship. Even Arwen had a hard time of it, at the end. -- posted by desertblue » OrlandoLover11 - Re: Re: Re: qtness!!!
